It's specifically for a social circle, an online meeting place which
isn't mediated by a third party, isn't subject to monitoring, ads,
surveillance. It's just for us to hang out and leave messages
privately. It's a good way doing that.
look into citadel. the web version of the groupware is pretty nice.

PMFJI, Citadel looks very interesting. Is anyone here using it?
I was exploring options to add community features to a website that I manage. The site has a geneology undercurrent. People would like to share photos/documents and remain in touch with each other. I've looked at Forum solutions like phpBB but I'm not excited about that one.

I always like vBulletin the best, for online forums... forgive me if yer talking about something else; but I bought a vBulletin license and have used it for various projects over the years. I think mine might be a tad outdated - but it is very powerful regardless...

I had a vBulletin license about 10 years ago. There was an NNTP plug-in that allowed vBulletin to sync with a newsgroup server, and for a while I used vBulletin to sync with my Synchronet BBS, and I used vBulletin as a web interface to my Synchronet message forums for a while. I eventually stopped using it though, since I think echicken's ecwebv4 is fairly good.
I remember working with you when we both had vBulletin running and using Synchronet to import messages. Is there a better alternative?

Xenforo is probably "the new hotness" in the way of forum software options. It's written by the guys who originally wrote vbulletin before it was bought out and turned to rubbish.

If there's a way to sync it with Synchronet's message bases (perhaps with an NNTP plugin or similar), that might be interesting to see.

Xenforo is cheaper by $100 too.
But what can Xenforo do that phpBB (free) doesn't?

So I don't know about Xenforo, but the one they had prior - vBulletin
- was way better than all the free ones, I think even phpBB at the
time... I assume that Xenforo is nicer too; just in the way of looks,
feels and being a full featured solid software.
If Xenforo is by the vBulletin guys, I'm gonna say you'd feel the difference...
