I hope I don't step on any toes here...Been away from Vertrauen for...phew, a while. But I just wanted to give a sort of public
service announcement based on where I've been and what's gone on.
Last September I was diagnosed with rectal cancer. But that was just
the second shoe falling, really..I had symptoms and very obvious issues going back to 2017...TWO WHOLE YEARS before diagnosis. And my
doctor, for those two years, ignored the symptoms and played it all by
the stats. "Oh you are only 48 years old...you don't need a
scoping..it is just a fissure or hemmorhoids."
...for two years. Meanwhile the symptoms...bleeding (lots) and
increasing blockage got worse. By the time I finally got in for a
scoping it took them 30 second to diagnose it for what it really was.
The last seven months have been...radiation/chemo followed by
frightening surgery. I'm happy to report the treatment was "full response," something that only happens to 1 in 10 people. And the end result of the surgery was that the cancer had been nullified, lymph
nodes negative.
To keep it short: do NOT let your general practitioner under-play a scoping. "50" is no longer the minimum age for this...get yourself checked sooner. ESPECIALLY if you are having symptoms like bleeding.
The GP's are behind the curve here...this stuff happens in your 40's
now. It is not "geriatric" by any means.

I feel I got very lucky though. Although my doctor dropped the ball,
my scoping doctor picked it up and ran with it. And he referred me
to the top surgeon in my area, who I can honestly say really knows
what he's doing. And that takes a lot given I really don't trust
doctors all that much.
As a plus, he really REALLY looks like Harpo Marx, right down to that Cheshire Cat smile (which he always uses when he's going to ask a
tough question). At least I didn't hear a "honk" before they put me
out on the operating table.
