I'm a little surprised, but also not at the same time. The Traveling Wilburys were made up of all musicians who were fairly big (or had been big) and relatively at the time: Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison. But I don't think I know many people who are familiar with The Traveling Wilburys. :)

Yes, I know who they are, but I've never really thought about listening to their stuff. All great musicians and songwriters in their own right, it's quite a "supergroup". It might have been teh fact that I don't carew much for Bob Dylan, was never a big Beatles fan and didn't listen to much TP & HB either. 3/5th of them are gone now.

He said several nights it sounded like an wonderful jam on party, and he would fight the urge to go downstairs and play with them. Due to contract obligations with whatever label he was with, he couldn't perform for a rival label.

Interesting.. I bought the Traveling Wilburys vol. 1 & 2 set when it came out in 2007(?), and it includes a DVD that has video sessions of them recording and explains how they got together, etc. I also saw an interview with George Harrison where he explained how the group got together, and I don't remember the part about using Paul McCartney's recording studio. I may have to re-watch. But from what I remember, they recorded in California, and I'm not sure if Paul McCartney has a recording studio in California.

From what I remember, the story was that George Harrison's record company wanted him to record a song for a B-side for one of his singles from his Cloud Nine album. So he went to pick up one of his guitars that he had loaned to Tom Petty and explained about a new song, and Tom Petty came along with him, and they had gathered with the other musicians (I don't remember the details) and recorded 'Handle With Care'. He said the record company thought it sounded so good that they wanted them to record a whole album's worth of songs, and that's how The Traveling Wilburys came about.

When the 2-CD & DVD set came out, it also included a few previously unreleased songs on the first album. They're actually not bad. I think it's interesting when record companies do that - I also have some other CDs that had been re-released with previously unreleased songs. Usually I think the reason some songs don't get released is because the original medium couldn't hold all the songs that were recorded, so they chose some to leave out.

That 'End Of The Line' video I posted earlier has an empty chair for Roy Orbison, who passed away before the album was released, and after Tom Petty passed away, I watched it again and felt sad since Tom Petty was one of the main singers on 'End Of The Line'.

Around that same time Clapton put out an album after he put out August that sounded like stuff he had left over from those sessions, plus random newer stuff. Of those newer songs, you can tell Harrison and Lynne were in the
mix. I'm not well learned in chord names, but George used to build stuff
over some type of diminished 7th chord (I may be wrong on name) and Eric

When the 2-CD & DVD set came out, it also included a few previously unreleas usly unreleased songs. Usually I think the reason some songs don't get rele

    Nightfox

I got the impression this went down before the first album, and George was
able to get everyone together early on to bang out some drafts. They'd all
be strumming along, saying whatever words would come into mind.

Regarding leftover songs, occasionally some get recycled and used as filler. In another reply I couldn't recall the Clapton album (Journeyman) and there
are several songs that could've been laid down when he recorded August. Out
on Youtube somehwere are some demo songs Van Halen recorded for Gene Simmons, and some of those songs were either used or showed up in a modified form all the way up to Women and Children First. Some of the Who's albums sounded
like compilations of leftover songs. The Who by the Numbers album sounded
like it material was partially dated from Who's Next

(ELO). I'd love to catch him live one day. The Wilburys were a pretty incredible and al under-rated lineup.

Jeff Lynne was tight with all of the greats. Did you happen to see a tribute to George Harrison? Clapton, Lynne. I didn't know who he was when ELO was popular. I thought he was just another "new guy". lol

Yeah that tribute concert was great. I'm not sure if it was that one or another, but there was one with Prince playing guitar, Ringo on drums, Clapton on guitar, Elton John on piano?? And yeah, Jeff Lynne.

Yeah, George Harrison released his 'Cloud Nine' album in 1987, soon before t

    Nightfox

Around that same time Clapton put out an album after he put out August that sounded like stuff he had left over from those sessions, plus random newer stuff. Of those newer songs, you can tell Harrison and Lynne were in the mix. I'm not well learned in chord names, but George used to build stuff over some type of diminished 7th chord (I may be wrong on name) and Eric would hate them because it felt odd soloing over them.

Cloud Nine is a great album. Sounds like cross between the two of them. There were a couple of songs in the charts from that one, if I remember correctly.

I listened to them a lot yet my wife had never heard of them. She is, however a Roy Orbison fan so I found a youtube video and played it for her. She was hooked!

Also if you happen to have access to the extended edition (released as part of the 2-pack with the DVD from I think 2005), I like the extra tracks "Maxine" and "Like a Ship" too. The only name I don't recongize from this list is Jeff Lynne; what other work d Lynne do? Did he go solo like the others did as well?

Electric Light Orchestra, or ELO, is where I knew of him from, pre-Wilburys.

I think I may have shared a link to one of their songs with you years ago (perhaps End Of The Line)?

I don't recall, maybe I didn't click the link back then? Well, it's all right... ;)

Jeff Lynne was part of Electric Light Orchestra, a band that was around from 1972-86. After 86 he went on to write and collaborate with other musicians.

Examples of his role as producer are Harrison's Cloud Nine, Petty's Full Moon Fever and Into the Great Wide Open, McCartney's Flaming Pie and Bryan Adams' Get Up.

Ahh, so he moved up past just being a musician to being a producer as well. That's interesting. Looking at wiki, it looks like "From Out of Nowhere" was Lynne's latest work on November of 2019. Nice to know that there are still real musicians out there.

Also, a British rock musician; songwriter, singer, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist.

I've always been fond of musician's from Britian.

Maybe not.. Now that I think about it, I think it was a song by Bob Dylan (who was also in The Traveling Wilburys).

I've always been fond of musician's from Britian.

There do seem to be a lot of good musicians from Britian. Some of my favorites are The Beatles (and separately Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and John Lennon), Dire Straits (and Mark Knopfler in his solo career), Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd, and others. Also Dirty Vegas is a British group that makes dance music (their song "Days Go By" was somewhat popular in 2002, and I also remember first hearing it in a Mitsubishi commercial on TV).

I also prefer the older generation British performers. Due to a hunger for music of all types especially from the US I get the impression British musicians growing up in the 50's and 60's received a wider cross section of exposure to jazz, blues, and R&B and well as bluegrass and country than the average US radio listener of that period. The other day I was listening to
an interview recorded a few years ago on NPR, and Little Richard mentioned he never received any royalties for all those times white musicians such as Pt Boone covered his tunes. He referred to it as when he was rocking and
rolling, the record label's pay master was ducking and hiding.
