PMFJI, but JamNNTP + Thunderbird is a nearly perfect solution. It's fast and it has the "offline" option if desired.

Lastread pointers are kept... where? Group subscriptions?

And there's the matter of having to maintain multiple configurations (one for the BBS, one for JAMNNTP), which is not something I want to have to do.

Actually, an offline newsreader on the iPad was a better interface than Thunderbird, but the lastread pointer issue killed NNTP for me. :/

G'day.. Could I request an nntp feed from your system for DOVE-NET?

    :/

Ahhh... Now I think I know why this conversation sounds familiar. I did not realize I was replying to "Tony L." LOL!

I still think that my "wild and crazy idea" of a Thunderbird (TB) addon, as expressed in FUTURE4FIDO, that could communicate to JamNNTP and exchange pointer data to get in sync could work.

Meanwhile, I find seeing the same unread messages with TB is no big deal. It's an easy step to Mark All Read or skip the familiar ones fairly quickly. It's not like one is flooded with messages these days anyway. ;)

I don't have an answer for your iPad newsreader use, but you can probably carry everything you need on a USB stick and plug that into conventional pcs and fetch your QWK packets and process them with Multimail/Sempoint as required - and thus always be in sync.

How many devices to you "hop" for FTN-based mail anyway?

    Haha yep. :D

Another possibility is fudging it on the server side by setting the lastread pointer to the last message that was fully downloaded, when using NNTP. Someone raised that possibility the other day. The add in would simply have to retrieve the value of the lastread pointer and update TB on opening the group.

Meanwhile, I find seeing the same unread messages with TB is no big
deal. It's an easy step to Mark All Read or skip the familiar ones

You'll be surprised, especially on nets like FSXnet, which has been known to get 100+ messages in a day in its main echo. :) And it's even worse when you lost track and end up replying to an old message you had already replied to! :D

Fudging it server side should work for keeping that side in sync, but updating the reader is another matter, altogether. That leaves getting subscriptions sorted, but least that's a much less frequent operation

I just carry around a netbook with SyncTerm and Multimail, when I travel. :)

I have it down to two, because I have the netbook for travelling. Having phone access would be nice, but hasn't proven practical for me at this stage.

Possibly, though not how I prefer to do things, but might be worth having such a setup as a standby.
