While I don't use NNTP myself, any idea that's a bit different
intrigues me, and I'm interested to see how this will look. :)

Hi Vk3Jed,
In a message to Tracker1 you wrote:

PMFJI, but JamNNTP + Thunderbird is a nearly perfect solution. It's
fast and it has the "offline" option if desired.
I'm on about 20 different nets and they can all be accessed through
the nntp interface. It just works.

And there's the matter of having to maintain multiple configurations
(one for the BBS, one for JAMNNTP), which is not something I want to
have to do.
Actually, an offline newsreader on the iPad was a better interface
than Thunderbird, but the lastread pointer issue killed NNTP for me.
:/

Ahhh... Now I think I know why this conversation sounds familiar. I
did not realize I was replying to "Tony L." LOL!
I still think that my "wild and crazy idea" of a Thunderbird (TB)
addon, as expressed in FUTURE4FIDO, that could communicate to JamNNTP
and exchange pointer data to get in sync could work.
Meanwhile, I find seeing the same unread messages with TB is no big
deal. It's an easy step to Mark All Read or skip the familiar ones
fairly quickly. It's not like one is flooded with messages these days anyway. ;)
I don't have an answer for your iPad newsreader use, but you can
probably carry everything you need on a USB stick and plug that into
conventional pcs and fetch your QWK packets and process them with Multimail/Sempoint as required - and thus always be in sync.
How many devices to you "hop" for FTN-based mail anyway?

Fudging it server side should work for keeping that side in sync, but updating
the reader is another matter, altogether. That leaves getting subscriptions sorted, but least that's a much less frequent operation

I just carry around a netbook with SyncTerm and Multimail, when I travel. :)

I have it down to two, because I have the netbook for travelling. Having phone
access would be nice, but hasn't proven practical for me at this stage.

Could also keep your OLMR on an SSH accessible VPN.
