Yep. September 11 has always felt like a weird day since then.
I remember getting up that day and heard I should turn on the TV and was surprised at what was happening. I was still in college and was working at a Dairy Queen and was scheduled to work that day, and at the Dairy Queen I was working at, they had a TV on the front counter with the news going all day covering the attacks.

Yea I was at work too. The first report from the radio station I heard was that a plane tried to land on one of the twin towers. I thought maybe someone in a small single engine plane needed to make an emergency landing so they tried to land on the top of one of the towers? WTF? Then I said to my self self, what kind of bozo tries to land a plane on top of a building?. Maybe the pilot was trying to avoid hurting anyone on the buzy streets? I dunno? I was baffled. It is New York. We also had another "bozo" try to land a jet in the hudson river. One never knows how things will turn out. :-)

Wasn't that Hudson river landing an emergency landing though? There was a movie that came out a few years ago based on a true story where (I think) one of the plane's engines had a problem shortly after takeoff and the pilot had to make an emergency landing. I suppose the "safest" thing to do was to try to land in the Hudson river. It sounded like the pilot did a good job of keeping the passengers safe.

There was a movie that came out a few years ago based on a true
story where (I think) one of the plane's engines had a problem
shortly after takeoff and the pilot had to make an emergency
    landing.

The movie was "Sully" (part of the real pilot's last name), who
was played by Tom Hanks. The plane lost both (all) it's engines.

I suppose the "safest" thing to do was to try to land
in the Hudson river. It sounded like the pilot did a good job of
    keeping the passengers safe.

It was the "only" option he had, and was about as close to a real
    miracle as you can get.

The movie was "OK", certainly not great.

Actually the Hudson landing in the river was because BOTH engines failed shortly after take off (due to bird strikes).

Planes can fly on 1 engine safely - and had it been only 1, he would have quickly returned to land...

If you ever watch youtube videos of plane take offs, "V2" is the speed at which the plan can continue to climb if one engine has failed.

I was also in grad school when 9/11 happened. I was a news junkie in those days, and always turned CNN on first thing. I saw the second plane hit the tower. It was one of the first moments where the online forums were necessary to me to process the experience-I was a user of FARK.com regularly then, and the thread on 9/11 was illustrative for sure. TV wasn't helpful, because all it could do was show you the horror. There was no processing or understanding, because everyone was dumbstruck.

Really good ; heard about a big hold in the Columbia Shuttle's heat shield tiles, and fixex the problem. (remembers hearing "cleared for orbit, just dont come back here" ie; no plans for checking your shell, check some other shells when you are up there)

evil (neglected good) ; hear the shuttle is damaged, thinks without thinking, and flys it into Earth atmothsphere witha popped zit on it's face; chances holyness. forgot to check it out while on vacation inside a culvert-type party pad (was a small place inthe beginning) -- thats it -- did not issue command to assist in any way.

now they have a sliding (glass?) door there, makes it easier to do spaace walks, I wonder if they want to jump from there, it is 110-350 miles .. I think phill-x did it at like 65 miles up.. the space suites are supposedly heat protectent, just like fire fighters suites.

There is no way those people couldn't wait for someone to get a in a rocket and do a spacewalk to fix that clay pigeon..... ooooor, back then there was only one manhole.. baa

I woke up not feeling well and went into work late. I got there sometime between the two planes hitting. Some folks had heard from family members
not a work that a "small" plane had hit one of the towers.

Later, I can remember that the only internet news sites we could get to
from work were not US sites. CNN and others were either over-trafficed or somehow affected by what was going on. We were getting updates from the

I had just started a job at a software company down in Tampa FL. Our office was in the flight path of the airport. One of my coworkers had some software that would send him breaking news stories and he got the alert that the first tower was hit. We turned the news on and huddled around the TV talking about how near impossible it would have to be to NOT see the tower and hit it when the second tower was hit. Shortly after that we stopped hearing ANY airplane land/take off. It was sureal.
