Which small Northern Wisconsin town, if you don't mind my asking?
Antigo
I visted N Wisconsin a couple of years ago, but did not manage to travel through there. I thought it was pretty country overall, and was a nice place to be while it was 90F+ back home. :)
Northern Wisconsin is a pretty big place. Most people consider "Up North" anywhere north of State Highway 29, which starts just north of Green Bay and bisects the state, heading towards Minneapolis.
I have a cottage on a lake north of Antigo that I spend a lot of time at in the summer (about 110 miles from where I live in Appleton), and a buddy who lives way up in the northwest corner of the state, which is about 250 miles from where I live, and 15 miles from my cottage.
As I said, big area. Full of lakes. lots of fishing to be done! :)
