I have a family of skunks who have recently taken up accomodations in my basement. The bottom floor of our house reeked so badly that we all slept upstairs.

They're sleeping peacefully down there now, I figured I'd wait until they go out for the night to put a work lamp down there and see if that encourages them to go elsewhere tomorrow.

If that doesn't work, send them an eviction notice.
Seriously though, I'm wondering how they got inside the house? If there's an open air vent to the basement or something, it might be good to put a screen in there or something.

I've looked at the perimeter of the house and haven't seen anything, but can't tell much because there's a foundation wall under a carport that I can't get to without interrupting them.

I put a 100W light bulb in one part of the basement. There's another bulb, but it's too close for comfort to the sleeping pests. I'm checking back occasionally.

The hole we'll need to reckon with once we get rid of the skunk - new problem, it's not multiple live skunks, but one dead one. I got a bit closer last night when skunks should have been out foraging and noticed the recently demised status of said skunk.

Well, it turns out that what I thought was a litter of skunks was one big skunk which had gotten in a fight with a raccoon, most likely. The spray a couple of days ago must have been the big fight. He was apparently wounded and died under my house some time yesterday, which was the Second, Larger Stink.

I called around this morning to pest control places looking for disposal, and was quoted $195+ for the service. Went downstairs to confirm, and the skunk was gone. Apparently the raccoon came back and dragged him out, I found a line of fur leading to a broken foundation vent.

I shoved steel wool into a smaller hole, replaced the vent, aired out the house all day and I think we're back to normal now.

People around here are making possum dens - they can attract and eat thousands of ticks a day! All you need to do is put half a pot in the ground and dig under it, and they'll find it sooner or later.

raccoons and skunks dont fight. you should get some expanding foam that gets rock hard to fill your holes.

that might work out if there's a large amount of possums. they normally dont use the same home for more than a few days. they are a weak animal with no real defensive means. if you want to attract a possum you can leave some cat food out.

The preferred solution is a bit of dish soap, hydrogen peroxide and baking
soda on any surfaces exposed to the spray. Open bowls of vinegar to remove
the smell from the air, and lots of airflow - difficult because it's
    pouring rain right now.

I put a box fan underneath the house blowing the air out of the basement.

They feed on agricultural and garden pests (mice, rats, wasps, etc.). And they HATE the smell of their own spray, and generally won't spray unless it's an absolute last resort (and rarely ever in an enclosed space, cos it'll get on them, too).

Dealt with a lot of them. Generally, they just want to be not around you. Had a few that were sociable. One liked being pet, but then he lived on a college campus and was used to the kids feeding him so he was pretty tame. But generally, they're harmless.

borderline personality disorder is one of the worst things to deal with. there's really no treatment except self correction.

i have about 7-8k so my move wont hurt me financially.
