• Reading Anything Good?

From Josh Ramsey@VERT/BASEMENT to All on Tuesday, December 04, 2018 10:52:46
Anybody reading, about to read, or have just read a good book?

I just finished Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake, which was a great beginning to a post-apocalyptic series. I really hope it maintains the level she set in Oryx.

Before moving on in that series, I'm thinking of finally tackling Albert Camus's classic The Fall. My goal is to read its English translation, and that can set me up to re-read it sometime in the future in the original French. (I'm not perfect at French, but re-reading books I've already read in English always helps me improve my skills.)

Anyway, what's your book(s) of the moment?

    Take care,
    -J

Currently about 2/3 done with John Grisham's "The Reckoning". Better
than some of his other recent works.

Also recently finished Stephen King's "The Outsider" which was
    excellent.

I just finished reading Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susannah Clarke. It was thoroughly fascinating and the world-building was right up my alley. It took me a year to finish it due to several false starts, but in the end it was well worth the time if the type of genre is something that appeals to you. It was very refreshing to read a fantasy novel with such a period-appropriate take on an alternate fantastical history.

I'm currently reading Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. Without giving spoilers, the book is set at some unspecified date in the near future, an unknown agent causes the Moon to shatter into seven pieces.

I love the references to ham radio. He even brings up Q codes.

This year I read the entire Aubrey-Maturin series (the books which inspired the movie "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World) and they were fantastic. After that, I still wanted to read something naval, so I tried "Six Frigates: The Epic History of the Founding of the U. S. Navy." That was an absolutely fantastic history book.

Finally, I read "The Woman Who Smashed Codes", another fantastic history book. This one will definitely become a movie sometime soon.

No, the Aubrey-Maturin series is fiction. It's sort of like Jane Austen meets the British Navy with battles and stuff. Pretty good.

someone is into some obscure movies and books!

Obscure? "Master and Commander" was a major movie with Russell Crowe. It did $212 million in 2003. The movie is fantastic, but the books are even better. The movie doesn't get into the doctor's role as an intelligence agent, which is a huge part of the books.

"The Woman Who Smashed Codes" is a national bestseller, and was named NPR's "best book of 2017". I really enjoyed it. It is truly a "life is stranger than fiction" tale.

A movie I really enjoyed. The fog scenes definitely test the grey-scale depth of those Plasma/LCD TVs!

are we still considering russell crowe a celebrity because he did that gladiator movie?

Also recently finished Stephen King's "The Outsider" which was
    excellent.

I really need to get back to Stephen King. Up to the book "11/22/63," I could still say I'd read all of Stephen King's novels. "The Outsider" is the first novel I've bought since, though I haven't started it, yet.

I really think it's down to no longer going to book stores regularly. I used to buy many of the latest books by massive-selling authors on a whim when I'd see store displays of their latest releases. I don't do the same while on Amazon or Audible. It probably has something to do with Internet advertising leaving such a nasty taste in my mouth after years trying to avoid intrusive or malicious ads.

    Take care,

Ah, I caught the BBC's mini-series when it aired a few years ago. It made me want to check out the book. I think I'll go pick it up, now that I've been reminded again. It's been too long.

This definitely sounds right up my alley. I love well-written narratives about the early history of code-breaking. I think Britain's Bletchley Park gets the lion's share of the glory from that period (not that it's undeserved), so a good work focusing on American efforts sounds nice.

Currently reading a horror novel called 'Snowblind' by Christopher Golden. It's the first novel I've read in some time since for a few years before that I was mostly reading historical stuff or technical books.

So far it seems ok, but I'm about half way through. He's a local author and he's weaved a lot of our city into the story (under a different name), so it piqued my interest.
