• LinkedIn Scamming?

From poindexter FORTRAN@VERT/REALITY to All on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 09:53:32
I got a linkedin request from someone at a company that I don't have on my resume. He claimed that my name came up in their "unclaimed funds" research or something like that.

Bells went a 'ringing in my head - looked like a typical phishing scam, but yet not. They had information about me that wasn't readily available, had a LinkedIn Profile that showed current employment at the employer in question, some other background information in the profile as well...

I'm tempted to call and verify employment, but not interested enough to jump through hoops. I was going to ask the person to send me an email from the company to a throwaway account, but I blocked the user already.

A company you used to work at?

Worth an email to the LinkedIn admins to see what they think. If it is a scam, they'd likely recognize it and deal with the account immediately.

Usually I don't bother adding people on LinkedIn who I've never even talked to before.

Several years ago, one thing I started noticing on LinkedIn was that people on LinkedIn were endorsing me for skills they never saw me use, and even people I had never worked with were endorsing me for skills (so how could they know if I'm good at that skill or not?). They were skills related to my work, but I even got endorsements for skills I've rarely even used. I never understood why people seemed to be endorsing random contacts for random skills, and I saw complaints in the LinkedIn discussion boards about it. Thankfully that seems to have stopped in recent years.

Sounds like spear phising to me: typical phishing message but with some personal information not found on your LinkedIn profile.

I'm tempted to call and verify employment, but not interested enough to jump through hoops. I was going to ask the person to send me an email from the company to a throwaway account, but I blocked the user already.

Good call on verifying. Me, personally, I would have ignored the message and moved on.

I'm tempted to call and verify employment, but not interested enough to jump through hoops. I was going to ask the person to send me an email
from the company to a throwaway account, but I blocked the user
    already.

I began using Juno Email in the mid-1990's on Dial-Up.
In 1996 I signed up with a local ISP that I could Log On using Dial-Up.
    Now I use DSL.

The first time I got a Email from someone who began using linkedin asking
me to join linkedin I went to linkedin's Home Page and read their TOS &
    Privacy pages.

When I read that any idea I wrote to another linkedin user about could be
used by linkedin to create a product but no credit would be given to me
for the idea, also linkedin would not compensate me if they made $$$$$$.$$'s from MY IDEA.

From what I read I decided not to use their service.

Occasionally I will see a Email from someone I know with a linkedin Address.
I called someone about receiving a linkedin Email from them and was told
they didn't send it, but they had allowed linkedin access to their Email Address Book.

I guess that is how the Email got sent to me.

I guess I'm lucky, in the many years since I got the first request I've received less than ten Emails asking me to join linkedin.

The BBS is the only social media I use, and that began in 1984 when I
bought a Commodore 64, 300 baud Modem and Floppy Drive and called a local Commodore BBS on Dial-Up.

I wanted to know how to use my PC, and that is still the main reason I
    Log On this BBS.

I know I will never become a Mister Know-It-All, but am glad to be able to
Read and Write messages in the echo conferences I've joined so I can
learn a bit more about computer use and other subjects.

Ocassionally I may write about something I learned to help other users.

They've been allowing endorsements from people that aren't actually endorsing you for years now. It's totally bogus. I love when you confront someone "did you endorese me for <skill>" and they say "what? i've never done that". Iwant to say i read somewhere a while back that LI got sued or something for this.

Typical social media socially engineering us... It's pretty bad. BBS's may make a comeback if this internet stuff doesn't work out :)

This BBS is best viewed in SynchTERM with 80 columns by 25 rows, 16 bit ANSI colors.

I don't know, it sounded better in my head. :/

I was getting a lot of false endorsements on LinkedIn for a while, but it seems to have stopped. A couple times I messaged people asking why they endorsed me for something, and they said they didn't remember endorsing me for that, or may have accidentally clicked it when they didn't mean to. I remember LinkedIn showing something after you logged in asking if you wanted to endorse certain contacts for various skills, and I suppose it could have been easy to accidentally click some of those. I could see how LinkedIn could have gotten a lawsuit for that.
