OK, this has nothing to do with BBS'es of computers I'ts just a sad story with a lesson hard learned.
On friday my wife say's there is a puddle of water between the lawn and the parkway, so I investigate and it turns out the line to our sprinkler system is leaking, So Saturday morning I start digging the 5 & 1\2 foot trench to get to the sprinkler main water line that is attached to the main, well our soil is a fine clay under the top soil and when saturated with water is really hard to deal with.
After about 6 hours of digging I finally get to where I can replace the verticle galvanized 36" pipe that had a hole where it rusted away.
I go get parts and replace pipe, turn water supply back on and wait till sunday to hook back up to sprinkler system.
So I go get new connectors and hook it up only to find that it was leaking at the horizontal pipe, so I spend another hour digging farther down cussing the devil pipe in the hell hole I was in, Luckily it was just the t union had loosened up and I was able to tighten it and no more leaking (yay).
So here it is sunday night (when I usually pay all bills online with bill pay) and I open the city envelope that I pressumed was the water garbage etc.. bill
and BTW this had been on my desk for about a week, anyway it was a letter telling me for $5.33 per month they would take care of my water leaks on my property up to $8,500 service would be covered with this insurance they offered.
OMG you better believe I will gladly pay them $5.33 per month to avoid that hell again :)
I guess I should read the stuff my wife puts on my desk, now she will razz me for eternity :(

... Chuck Norris can kick a fart back into an ass.

This is the 'General' area. You don't have to post only about BBSes or computers here. :)

Regarding your water leak, that does sound like a pain. Sometimes I wish I was still renting an apartment rather than owning a house, so I wouldn't have to deal with house maintenance.

I've had some annoying neighbors in apartments, though the last apartment I lived in was fairly good. There was one apartment I lived in where the neighbor across my apartment wall would play loud music late at night, and I could hear the bass from the music (which would wake me up) at around 2 AM. One night I decided to go out and ring his doorbell to talk to him about it, and another neighbor was out at his door doing the same thing. He kept doing it, so I called the police one night when it was happening. The police went in and talked to him, and he stopped doing it but only for a couple weeks and it started up again. That same apartment complex had parking spaces right outside the bedroom windows, and there was someone who parked a (loud) diesel truck outside my bedroom window and would start it up around 5:30AM and let it sit for about 15 minutes before leaving.

The apartment I moved out of just before I bought my current house was decent. My first upstairs neighbor was nice and friendly, but he moved out soon after I moved in. The guy who moved in had a fish tank in his apartment that apparently burst open one evening when I wasn't home, and it started spilling water into my apartment through the ceiling. I came home and found he was nice enough to have left a note on my door, and he helped move some stuff out of the way of the water. I still had to call the apartment maintenance so they could bring in their fans for a few days to dry the carpets in my apartment and patch the ceiling where the water had damaged part of the ceiling. The water was dripping onto one of my music instruments (a synthesizer) in my apartment, but thankfully it wasn't damaged.

There was also a neighbor across the walkway in that apartment who would talk on his cell phone outside, and I could hear him in my bedroom, which got a bit annoying after a while.

I realized later (after I moved out, which was soon after) it sounded like it may have been a cat playing with a spring door stopper mounted to the wall.

It's nice to have good neighbors. I think the fair housing act makes it difficult

Motorcycle/dirt bike engine revving is one of my peeves. I've lived next to people who have motorcycles who like to start them up and just rev the engines for whatever reason. I had a neighbor like that while living in a house a long time ago, and I was in college, so it was especially annoying because the neghbor would rev his engine while I was trying to study. I think he had a Harley Davidson. Years later, I was staying at someone's apartment for the weekend, and there was a guy in a house nearby who apparently liked to work on dirt bikes and rev their engines early in the morning. One Saturday morning the neighbor was revving an engine at around 8:00 AM, and I heard another neighbor outside yell "Asshole!"

That kind of thing doesn't always pay off.. I had an upstairs neighbor who seemed to have parties late at night, and a couple times when they were being a bit loud after 10PM, I knocked on my ceiling with a broom. When I complained to the apartment management about them, the apartment management said they complained about me knocking on their floor with a broom and that I should stop doing that.

I found that was an illusion, and a larger regional town/small city is actually much more convenient in practice. I used to live in Melbourne (pop 4 million), though in the suburbs, and to engage my interests, I was always driving or taking public transport all over the city, with the average journey being close to 60 minutes (one way). Everything was spread out by the sheer size of the place. Distances travelled were typically 10 - 40km one way for these journeys, 20 being close to the average.

Now I live in what is termed as a "regional city" of 100,000 people. I have more active interests and commitments now, but my average travel time is nearer 10 minutes, and distance travelled closer to 5km. That's when I choose not to walk, which will get me into the middle of town in 25 minutes (3km) or to the local supermarket in under 4 minutes (400 metres). The "convenience" of the big city for me was an illusion, I have more convenioence now. :)

I'm in a fairly quiet area, only had the rare burnout late at night, briefly, but not enough to be anything more than a brief irritant. More annoying are trailbike riders, because they ruin the peace of a nice hike in the bush.

Yeah, I also try not to do things that would bother people. I

Yeah, I'm not sure what happened with his fish tank.

(by the way i had so many fishtanks, my house looked like a fish store)

another thing that can happen is a cord can get condensation or 'pull water' and get water all over the floor if it's touching water and situating a certain way. i had this happen with a heater once.

another thing that can happen is the filter has some issue and it drops water on the floor periodically.

electric bill last month was $58. I could never achieve that low of a bill

i havent had a bill that low in 17 years

The apartment was built in the last 10 years, so it's fairly energy efficient. It's also just me here, so that reduces washer and dryer usage, and such.

Mine is 80 Euro a month which is approx 94 dollar. But I have lots of devices... I'm maried but we have no kids. So a 2 household with a lot
    of computers :)

That's still not bad. I know some people that pay upwards of $300 in the summer months. For the two of you $94 is pretty decent.

My house has vaulted ceilings, which I don't think helps with heating
    and cooling. It seems many houses around here have vaulted ceilings;
it's hard to find one that doesn't.

Vaulted or high ceilings, yes. My mom has high ceilings in her house, so
she has to effectively cool more air. Her electric bill is high. I can
touch my ceiling on my tippy toes. That's part of the reason for my energy savings.

I've had some annoying neighbors in apartments, though the last apartment I lived in was fairly good. There was one apartment I lived in where the neighbor across my apartment wall would play loud music late at night, and I could hear the bass from the music (which would wake me up) at around 2 AM. One night I decided to go out and ring his doorbell to talk to him

Hey, I used to live across the street from a college flop house. They'd usually be pretty quiet, but every once in a while, they'd throw a party and keep me up until, like, 2 a.m. with all their loud music and all their hootin' and hollerin'. They seemed like decent enough kids, but living across the street from them did seem at times to be a drag. So I moved out. Of course, if everybody moved out of the immediate neighborhood of a party house such as that, it'd be a ghost town. :)
