Is Fidonet even worth the hassle of setting up anymore? I was a node back in the day...

Depends what you want. There still are a few good (as in quality traffic, not bots, flame wars or pissing contests) echoes on Fidonet. I recently got some great support off the BINKD echo, and the IPV6 echo is also very good.
