My understanding is they just deactivate it, in the event that you ever
want to 'come back.' :-)

I'm sure it's so they can keep the history, etc. I don't kid myself that
it's free in any way, shape or form - but I still choose to use it. It's great for keeping up with old friends!

While it is easier to access the menu to deactivate your account, there actually is a menu to fully delete it.
