• Trying out SeaMonkey again

    From Deavmi@VERT/KK4QBN to DOVE-Net.General on Sunday, August 27, 2017 20:45:12
So I'm trying out SeaMonkey again and I must say, I really like it. It
has a built-in website creator (page editor to be more correct), IRC
client, mail, news and not to forget a web browser.

I think when I get setup for university next year that this will
definately be my goto web thang (along with firefox and thunderbird just
in case but I do really like it for being simple and all (not that the aforementioned two are not).

For some reason I thought SeaMonkey wasn't being developed anymore, but I guess it still is. I remember when Netscape was a similar application suite with the browser bundled along with a web page editor, email client, IRC, etc.. These days, I tend to use separate software for that stuff (and I rarely even use dedicated email software anymore, as I tend to use web mail).

I often use Chrome for my web browser and occasionally used Firefox. A while ago, I ended up switching from Firefox to Pale Moon.. Pale Moon is based on an older fork of Firefox (with the older Firefox UI, which I like) but is still kept up to date and is fairly fast.

Netscape with all of the built-in apps (News, FTP, email, and web) along with palm desktop rocked back in 2000 on low-end systems. I set up an entire company with that kit.

I still have some old fashioned HTML pages kicking around. I've been using Notepad to edit them of late, but a decent WYSIWYG editor would be handy at times. Might install Seamonkey and see how it goes. I think I tried it years ago and it was quite good, from memory.

I noticed that WYSIWYG HTML editors tend to produce bloated HTML (though perhaps they've gotten better over time). I tend to prefer to edit HTML with a simple text editor (like Notepad and such), but I could understand why some would want to use a WYSIWIG editor for more complex pages & sites.

It has been a while since I have used a WYSIWYG HTML editors in a long while, and I would agree that back then it would produce bloated HTML; FrontPage was the worst, and FrontPage created HTML files that would only work in Internet Explorer.

Yeah, you are right, certainly when I originally did one of my sites, the editors did add a lot of bloat, but when I'm just adding or changing text, Notepad is fine, but when I want to play with something more visual, I need to be able to see what's going on. :)

I used to use Allaire Homesite -- Macromedia bought them and disabled the best features -- why buy $49 Homesite when $299 Dreamweaver did all that and more?

There's a program called Komposer that's pretty good for quickie HTML; it's open source and based on a KDE program, so it's available for Linux, too.

Don't know either of those, but certainly familiar with Dreamweaver, not that I used it myself. My desktop is Windows at this point in time. :)

all those editors pile shit upon shit to your code. they arent intelligent enough to do otherwise. the best way to do a website if you arent a pro is get a template and edit it by hand.

i used kompozer and it does the same as all those editors.

It's a case of how important that is. :)
