There was a good article about knife fighting on a martial arts blog a long time ago where the guy suggests you give an uncapped marker to someone, to your young child even, while you're wearing white shirt, and then you can spar and see if you can stop them before they tag you at least once.

Never tried, but I got the point. There's a KIND of civility and natural diplomacy that comes from knowing that even if you WIN the fight the scars will be permanent.

Now, that's interesting and a good idea. Not a fan of promoting violence, but how else would one have to defend themselves? I guess it could teach them a lesson on the consequences of getting into these kind of fights, or make them be able to better defend themselves against such attacks.

Well, I for one don't see the point in those sort of fights. If it's a matter of self defence (i.e. not defending anyone else), I subscribe to the SR-71 school of self defence - there's a better than 95% chance I can outrun any attacker. Less messy that way. However, if it's a matter of defending someone else, then things get more complicated.

The SR-71 was a US spy plane capable of flying faster than Mach 3, and if an enemy took a shot, the pilot simpy opened up the throttle and outrun whatever missile was launched at them. :)
