I have an old original Wii that's been sitting dormant for a while - I mostly use it for Netflix in my kid's room. The Wii services have been shutting down over the years and most recently YouTube stopped working.
I did some poking around and found a jailbreak for the Wii that
includes an app browser. There's DOOM, Quake and DOSBox for Wii, and a handful of games. More interesting is that there are emulators for a
ton of consoles and an app for running Wii games from images. Connect a USB drive, dump all of your wii games to images and you can run them without swapping disks. Download other platform games to the drive and
you can play them, too.
I want to try Quake with the nunchuk controller...
I have an original Wii as well, which is why this caught my eye...
Bought it for the wife to do 'exercise stuff' years ago - she
moved onto other things. I played it a bit. Wanted to use it
for GameCube stuff, but couldn't get the Star Wars game I
wanted to play to run on it.
Bought her a Wii U later on, but we still have the Wii...

When I first got a Wii, I liked browsing the news on the Wii News
channel. I was disappointed when Nintendo stopped offering that
service.
In all, I actually don't play the Wii very often..
Interesting to know who still has/uses a Wii. I bought a Wii, but mainly
I still have a few Wii's, and they're all softmodded to run NES/SNES/SMS/Genesis roms. The emulators work great, some of the filters could be better (I like OpenEMU on Mac the best). Also added a hard drive
I might have to look into modding mine to run some emulators.. The last time I checked on Wii modding (years ago), I remember reading something saying it was difficult (near impossible?) to do with the latest Wii updates, since Nintendo was putting some anti-modding protections in it. I imagine that's probably changed by now..
Its been a while, but the mod pack I have requires a certian version of the software and you can no longer update after that. I do believe you are correct with that one. I believe anything over 4.4u is a no go with the mod I'm using, and I swear I cannot even remember the name of it.. it was a lot of software modification, but was'nt too bad.
youtube now has cut support for wii, but I still use it for netflix and hulu, and watch dvds if I like, there are plenty of other media features out there also. but the games... thats what I mainly did it for is the games.. it was like being 10 again and having a nintendo, except I had every game that ever existed. it all wore off pretty quick.. I have used the emulators in a while..

I wonder if you can downgrade the Wii to an earlier firmware..

I have other ways of running emulators, which is why I haven't modded my Wii.. I'm not sure if it's something I really want enough to do or not.
Also I'm a little bummed that services have been dropping support for the Wii, although I totally understand why. I like the Wii - although honestly I never really have used the Wii very much.. Just occsaionally.

I really don't think you could "Officialy" otherwise I have'nt looked.

But it's just so much fund running sega/snes/nes/gamecube and anything else off one console..
I'm very bummed.. I don't use the wii much anymore for gaming.. but it is used EVERYDAY. the hardware is solid, it has never given issues.. and it really sucks that youtube dropped support because I loved streaming stuff from my phone to my tv.. there still may be ways around that though.
I never really caught on to many of the Wii games.. I loved all the marios, and thats about it.. the WII would have been a great money maker if Nintendo finds whoever keeps shoving their thumbs up their bums and gets rid of them.. the Hardware is just amazing.. even in todays standards.. but the games.. well sucked..
I enjoyed playing gamecube games on it better, they seemed to perform better emulated on the wii than the original gamecube.
but these days, a used wii can be had for about 15 dollars at the pawn shop.

It seems to me that the Wii probably has been a great money maker for Nintendo. The Wii had a great run - I think the Wii came out in 2006, and it seemed popular up until it was replaced by the Wii U.
Nowadays, I think Nintendo has gone insane. They totally could have sold
a billion more NES Classics at 2x the price. But they decided they were done selling them :)

That's pretty good.. But I imagine you'd just get the Wii & power supply; not sure if you'd get any controllers, manual, or original included game discs etc. from a pawn shop, or even buying used from a game store. But $15 is still a fairly good deal. You can find accessories & games used cheap too.
I find it frustrating though, that used game systems & games lack some of the things that are nice to have.. Used video games rarely have the instruction manual with them, which makes me wonder if everyone just throws out the instructions? Even if a game is fairly easy to figure out, I think it's cool to have the manual to look at. Many used video games don't even have the protective cover that they usually come in.. GameStop usually provides their own cover/case for used video games that don't have the original case/cover.

The Wii didn't run Gamecube games via emulation so much as it basically contained Gamecube hardware already. It's similar to how the DS basically contained a GBA, and the 7800 basically contained a 2600 for backwards compatibility (it's also why later Wiis can't run GC games - they started skimping on the extra hardware to save costs.)
