where is the information on this? i thought nielson data was based on samples from picked members. they asked me to be part of it during
sweeps one year. ---
There is a wing of neilson called "Netratings" that measures metrics from
the cable set-top boxes, itunes, hulu, and the streaming aps from the network. It is not
as accurate as the sweeps data you participated in that measures age of
viewer and demographics. There's another program that places a box in homes that measures demographcis and reads the same inaudible markers that shazam uses to identify tv shows.
My former roommate worked for Neilson and she knew exactly what was
measureed at all times. She also fussed at me for leaving my cable box on
and just turning my tv off as it will count a "view" for whatever channel it was left on. Knowing this I usually leave it tuned to Scifi so that they continue to develop good shows.
So yes it is counted as being "viewed" it's not counted as what age group viewed it (those are usually forms that people fill out).
Ultimately though, by downloading from torrent channels you are still
hurting the people who produce the show. I will admit I've turned to
torrents to find some hard to find stuff that is not on DVD or just old
shows.
But it's amazing just how much is available through legitimate streaming services... and there are more shows available every month it seems.
