LOL - full circle - the snake is eating his own tail... :-)

That's like an amateur radio operator being cannibalistic...having
fried ham for breakfast, or ham sandwiches for lunch. ;)

Hey Daryl - sorry for being out of touch. How's the BBS upgrade going?

Still no ticket here... I'm studied & prepped for Tech and General both,
but the wife is still not confident with Tech. I am afraid to test without
her and then she doesn't get around to it... This was something we were
going to do together - if I move ahead now I'm afraid it will be yet
ANOTHER hobby "we" started and that I'm the only one invovled in...

We are plannig to visit our son in Indy in June - really wanted to have
my ticket so I could do some chatting on the way there and back.

    Hi, Jimmy...

Hey Daryl - sorry for being out of touch. How's the BBS upgrade going?

I have got Synchronet installed (too much trouble with Mystic), and Synchronet with its comport redirection feature allows me to put
non-fossil doors online. I had to reset the user base, but I'm quickly upgrading "former users". The purge was also done, since many had not
logged on in a long time.

Don't push her on it. When she is ready, she will let you know. Even
if you get licensed, she can still talk as "Third Party Traffic", until
she passes her test, and gets a callsign of her own.

Go to http://www.wx1der.com/hamradio.htm@study for a list of 10 study
options for a ham radio license. Some are free, and some (like Ham Test Online), charge a fee...but HTO offers a money back guarantee. As a side
note, the developer of Synchronet, Rob Swindell, is also a ham radio
operator, but I don't know his callsign offhand. In the Synchronet Doors
and Utilities category, there is a deal to take a practice test with
each element of the ham radio license (Technician, General, and Amateur
Extra). I realized how dumb I had become when I tried the Technician
exam. Believe me, if renewal meant re-testing, ham radio would have died
    off long ago.

At least now, you can get your callsign within a week or two after you
pass the exam. The FCC is no longer mailing out paper copies of the license...you have to go to the FCC ULS website to get it. But, it beats
the license getting LOST by the Postal Service (don't get me started on
the crap with the Postal Service). It used to be where you had to have
your license IN HAND before you could get on the air. Now, once it shows
up in the FCC ULS, you are good to go. Believe me, a week or two, beats
the daylights out of waiting 3 to 6 months!!

    Daryl, WX1DER

I need to log back in then... :-)

Yeah - didn't think about that - she's not interested in the 'chat'
anyway, just wants it for storm chasing, and most likely I will be
with her then. I want us both to have it for another reason though -
so we can still communicate when not together and the cell phones
    go down. :-)

LOL - we've actually been using some free apps on our phones. They have
sample tests built in and give you immediate feedback.

We are on the road now toward the beach... Our youngest son said they
were going and my wife and I decided to drive them... I'm a passenger
right now, which is how I'm doing this stuff. :-) We talked to the
local VE's and planning to take the tests Thursday. I'm confident I'll
get tech and general. She knows the tech stuff and is farily okay on
the General, but not confident she'll get that far. :-) We're confident
she'll pass tech, though, and that will let her use the HT's. I will
be the one who puts up an antenna, talks on HF, etc. :-)

I would like to eventually get a good mobile unit, but my first priority
is to get HER a good mobile that she can still communicate with the fire department dispatch, etc.

WOW - knew it was all paperless now, but didn't know it made that much
of a difference! So if they get the test results in by the weekend,
I could have my license by the next weekend? Will cut it close, but it
    might work... :-)
