Now I think Common Core has messed up everything with math.

I have to wonder if the Abbott and Costello routines of "You have two
    10's for a 5??", and "13 times 7 is 28" gave Common Core ideas. :P

I am told it is to teach them the concept of "base 10" I am sorry but
I've not yet worked a job where I had to use any calculus or higher math
I have ever taken much less base ten and I took calculus II.

    Common core is a joke.

They tried years ago to get the U.S. to go to metric, but there's too
much resistance. They use metrics with the math in the ham radio license
exams, and to me, it's easier.

In fact, when my Mom (who will be 90 in September) was in school over
70 years ago, they were saying then that "the metric system was on the
way". We know how that turned out. :P Makes as much sense as the tagline
    below.

    Common core is a joke.

Exactly. Kids don't know their math tables (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division). If their calculator or smartphone fails
(as it will with an EMP), they are screwed (for that matter, everyone
else is as well). But, while I can do calculations in my head, I'll
never be as good as my late father, who was comptroller for Swift
Independent Packing Company before he retired.

My late father could work a comptometer like nobody's business. He
could also figure out restaurant tips in his head. However, he
understandably got annoyed when they asked beforehand (such at a buffet restaurant) if he wanted to leave a tip. He'd usually reply with

would prefer to see how the employee would take care of my needs, before
I tipped them. However, most restaurants now automatically implement a
gratuity for parties of 5 or more...usually around 20% of the check.

That's the point where I think that if they're going to automatically add a gratuity, then why not just do away with tips and pay their staff accordingly? Even if they have to figure that into the pricing of the food. Automatically adding a gratuity seems a little presumptuous/tacky. If they really need that money, then it seems like they might as well just charge a little more so that it doesn't seem so tacky..

From the looks if it, if they are trying to teach radix math -- like being able to move a decimal point to multiply or divide by 10 - that's a handy skill to have. That's typically how I multiply and divide in my head, like figuring out tips.

Seeing someone my age or older quickly add or subtract using old math by hand doesn't seem too obsolete though.

I have had numerous "cognative" tests to determine my disability...
while I never was the greatest in math strangely I am able to do math
better now than my pre-injury. I can play guitar somewhat better now
than pre-injury, but lost most of my musical ability after being hit
head on by a drunk driver in 1990 and having two fingers detached. The neurologist thinks it is because enough time has passed that the nerves
have healed. All I know is I lost my scholarship to Juliard when I
    couldn't play piano anymore.

My Short term memory is totally borked... long term comes and goes. But amazingly I can go grocery shopping and add up everything I'm buying
figuring the taxes as I go on the taxibles and I'm usually within a few
pennies of the register totals. I just recently learned that if there
is any .000001 fractional tax the state of kentucky rounds up to the
next penny... so if an items tax is .2400003 cents it's .25 that they

else is as well). But, while I can do calculations in my head, I'll
never be as good as my late father, who was comptroller for Swift

My first job, a segway into computers was data entry into a general ledger. I routinely added 20-30 numbers together in my head to make sure I'd gotten the figures right. I'm sure I've lost most of that now after many years of disuse.

I can still figure a 15% tip in my head, though. :)

And this is what is really, REALLY sad. Case in point, my significant other can make change in his brain faster than the cashier can key in
the amount tendered into the register at the grocery store.

Side point, anyone with 10-key experience can enter a credit card number into a cash register in a fraction of the time it takes to try re-swiping it over and over and over and over...

My Short term memory is totally borked... long term comes and goes.

We're all losing our memory, thanks to computers. While it's great to be able to store a ton of information in our phones and computers, I remembered a lot more when I wrote it down -- and still do.

I have a Midori leather notebook; it's a little leather binder with elastic straps for holding a small "Field Notes" sized notebook. It also holds a phone and a small pen, and fits in my back pocket. I have started writing things down in it and committing the things I need to keep more permanently to my phone. It helps a lot.

In fairness, there is a LOT more to remember now.

I like to keep my mental arithmetic sharp. These days, it seems to be
a rare skill, and one well worth preserving.

    That's for sure.

After the fall of civilization, I will be revered as The Oracle by my silicon valley brethren crippled by the electromagnetic pulse that destroys our technology.

I have a self-winding mechanical watch, a sundial, and can add, subtract, multiple and divide in my head. And I have a large document box full of empty notebooks.
