• questions on BBs'es about door games.

From Psycoborg@VERT/SKALLIAN to All on Thursday, May 05, 2016 10:44:41
a long time ago, before DSL and cable. there were dial up bbs'es and they had door games.
since im a new sysop for my BBS i dont see nay place to find door games, or add them. is this a thing of the past?
or can you still add and play them. i have a high speed 10 node BBs, but i think it can acttually handle a few more nodes.
i have a 40 mb up and 60 mb down connection. so im wondering how many nodes will it handle?

    the psycobrg.

also one other thing. downloads on BBS's still have modem commands. if you use a telnet connection Via DSL. how would you upload or download
    files to your bbs?

    yes, ima noob.

Yes, BBS door games are still a thing (and are one of the main things people still use BBSes for).. Are you running Synchronet? If so, door games are set up in SCFG under "External Programs". If you are using Synchronet, you should check the Synchronet documentation:
    http://www.synchro.net/docs/sysop.html
Check under "External Programs" on that link. There's also the Synchronet wiki:
    http://wiki.synchro.net/

What do you mean by downloads having modem commands? Most BBS telnet software can handle downloads & uploads just fine without doing anything special.. Try using SyncTerm, mTelnet, or NetRunner for instance - Those are BBS telnet programs, and file transfers work just fine with them.

Sure. You can find them by searching the web; there are plenty available.

It looks like you're running Synchronet. Information on how to configure external programs (including door games) is available on the wiki:

    http://wiki.synchro.net/howto:door:index

Lots of other info is on the wiki as well, so please remember that it exists.

You could set up a lot of nodes, but it's not likely to be worthwhile. In fact, it can make setting up some old door games quite tedious when they need to be told about all of your nodes. Ten nodes is more than enough to start with; maybe consider adding more if you see a need for it later - which you almost certainly won't.

Thanks nightfox. i am using syncronet. i just installed it and am playing with it.

i think i broke it already. :) no worries. I might just reinstall the BBS and resync.

as foor the doors, i just found them. :) i will read up on them.

as for file uploads and downloads. when i select to upload a file. it asks me what modem protocol aka zmodem. since im on a cable line? there is no modem via telnet. so i dont understand
why it still has that option.
anyhoo. I will look at those links you provided. thanks. :)

Zmodem is a file transfer protocol. It doesn't mean it wants to use an actual modem. As a file transfer protocol, zmodem still works when accessing a BBS via
the internet. You can simply use it, and it will work..

Do a Google search for BBSLink. He hosts a place where there are a lot of door games that's simple to connect to.

Tell 'em Patch sent ya! =)

The one main feature of Synchronet that I *LOVE* is that you can set
up non-fossil doors just like a regular telnet door. To my knowledge, no
    other BBS package offers that.

I think that's due to COM port redirection. And I agree, I like that feature of Synchronet as well.

Winserver works the same way... just set the door to com1 and winserver
handles the rest even on a multi-line system

It allowed me to put several ham radio doors, and the DreamNet
