• Qodem Development Update

From Kevinl@VERT to All on Friday, March 18, 2016 22:21:00
    Hi all,

tl;dr - 1.0beta is coming really soon. :-) Check out the Windows
    version here: http://qodem.sf.net/qodem-1.0beta-preview-setup.exe

Last year I picked Qodem development back up. I had hoped that I
would hit my ever-elusive 1.0 release within a few months, but alas
life got in the way again plus I decided to go for broke on some
additional features. Well, I am happy to say that I am getting very
close indeed to 1.0. In fact I have only one major feature and one
major bug left. I plan to put out a formal 1.0beta up for download on
    April 27: Qodem's 13th birthday.

In the last ten months Qodem has come a long way. The main theme has
been stability on Windows and a convenient out-of-the-box experience.
It now has an installer that includes a good-looking VGA font, and
puts a copy of the Telnet BBS Guide directory in Qodem phonebook
format ready to load. Dozens of bugs have been fixed, and it now has
(very experimental) support for serial ports in Windows. The codebase
has undergone a massive overhaul, was dedicated to the public domain,
and supports Visual C++ 6 as well as Borland C++ 5.

The Windows 1.0beta "preview" download is pretty good. It's much more
stable than the old 1.0alpha and finally worthy of being tried out in
the real world. I wanted to get this out here to see how y'all like
    it.

    -Kevin

Let me the first to respond to your post Kevin. I've been using Qodem for over 3 years now and absolutley love it! (Plug). I'm using the new 1.0beta right now and I'm already seeing some great changes. I'm happy to report that ansi screens are displaying much better. I'm seeing blinking text now that I hadn't seen before. I love the font options you added and the windows installer works like a charm. I've been waiting some time for this update and I can tell you it was well worth the wait. Keep up the good work and thanks!

    Thanks Kevin,

I gave this a try and I already noticed improvements. My OS is Windows 8.1 (64-bit).

The last version would fail a download through Kermit (my BBS on the far end was using the old DOS 3.16 executable), but this new version works like a champ.

I have been connecting over SSH and it works really well. I tried connecting over RLogin, and my BBS started a New User Signup because it saw the username passed as "K" instead of "Kendb3".

Also, the ANSI screens look great, however when I doubled the Font Size to see things a bit better, there seems to be tiny gaps on the edge of some of the block drawing characters in CP437. I can grab a screen shot if you like.

Thank you for the kind words, it helps a lot knowing that others out
there are finding it useful. Getting the Win32 version working via
Borland and VC has turned out to be really good for Qodem too, it
sussed out several really subtle yet critical bugs.

Crossing fingers for a good release really soon now....

Awesome! I discovered some bugs in Kermit byte encoding and decoding
while I was transliterating it to Java that might have explained that.
Glad to hear it is working better.

Thanks for opening up the issue on github, I definitely check there
most often. I think I know what's causing this, should have a fix in
    shortly.

Feel free to open another issue on github. I don't know if I will be
able to fix this one (might need to hunt for yet another font), but
the screenshot would be great to see. If you need a bigger font right
    away, TerminusTTF is pretty good.

    Thanks again for the feedback.

    No problem!

I submitted the Font issue, but I was also a bit more specific after some testing. It looks like some font sizes show this, and some do not. I also tried the TerminusTTF, it is a really nice font. The VGA is a better pick, and now that I know certain font sizes work better than others, its minor, really.

I included screen shots from 10-pt, 20-pt, and 24-pt font sizes so you can get a comparison.

    Again, great work!
