Yep, memories for sure. Lots of good message areas, each a community
in itself, plenty og great nets -

I came for the geek - stayed for the messages (back in the 90's). One
board - The Fridge - was the first to bring in non-usenet stuff! They
brought in Intelec and it really opened my eyes to what was out there!
Wasn't long till I became a moderator on several of the channels.

Then, later, they started VOL_NET (Tennessee area BBS's that were
long distance calls from one another as well as some Northern
Mississippi BBS's). Didn't have as much traffic, but was cool to
chat with people that were just a little further down the road
that you would otherwise potentially never meet! Actually started
chatting about Stephen King books with one user - turned out she
was the sysop's wife of a BBS I would never have connected to due
to long distance charges. We met at McDonalds in their town
(Lexington, TN) and my wife and I chatted with the two of them
while our kids played in the indoor playground. She was loanging me
    a hardback copy of Insomnia.

Fidonet and a heap of Othernets, as
well as some big QWK networks -

FidoNet was something I never got into back in the day... For
some reason none of the BBS's in Jackson were nodes. I had
heard about it, but wasn't something I was willing to dial
LD for. :-) Not when there were FIVE BBS's that were local
    to me. :-)

I came to communicate and a bit of downloading, and communication became the central aspect. :) Discovered offline mail and never looked back! :)

I started the BBS on Fidonet, then found another net called Globalnet that was active and friendly, with a wide range of message areas. Later, I joined a number of specialised Othernets, and some local echos. Many feeds were local, though Globalnet was sourced from interstate, and eventually some feeds came direct from the USA.

I was in the big smoke back then, and Fidonet was everywhere. There were at least 4 or 5 nets within local call range, and the RC assigned me to the net that corresponded what what side of town I was on at the time. Today, there seems to be only one net for the entire state.

LOL - I have a sister that lived in Memphis MANY years ago and would dial
up there before I even had heard of it. She called herself a leech and
    just wanted files. :-)

Very cool! It might be a good thing that there wasn't more available
to me back then... Might have spent TOO MUCH time there. LOL
