Alright so I was at work today on my lunch break and on the TV I saw somthing that I found quite amusing. You thought selfie sitcks were bad? Well how about a Toilet that you don't even need to touch. You just wave your have over it and it takes care of it for you. As much as I enjoy technology, I think that it is in the process of making us very lazy. ;)

What exactly does it take care of for you? Flushing? Automatic flushing toilets have already been around for a long time, those are nothing new..

It is basically a no touch flush. I'm not sure what the advantage is to waving your hand over the tank, as opposed to using a lever. Perhaps they are marketing to people who have boatloads of $$ and nothing better to do with it.

You seemed surprised to hear about that, even though no-touch flush toilets have been around for quite a while. I've mainly seen them in public places though such as workplaces, airports, etc., which probably have enough money
to afford them. I've never seen one at someone's house. I think the main concern is regarding cleanliness - If you don't have to touch the toilet to flush it, then the risk of getting sick due to germs from other people using the toilet, which is a concern in public restrooms. Many public restrooms
also have no-touch water faucets, soap dispensers, and paper towel dispensers (which have also existed for many years).

I'd certainly hope so, after doing their business.. But I'm still always surprised at the number of people I see leave a (public) bathroom without washing their hands. Not too long ago I even saw someone leave one of the stalls in the bathroom and left without washing their hands. I certainly won't disagree with the part about our society being dumbed down in the slightest... It makes it much more manageable to the higher echelons of the global society, I think. On the other hand, I do believe that my 9 year old son would beg to differ with you regarding not having to do math on paper. I have to deal with some near tantrums from that crap on far too regular of a basis. I know now that he only has those tantrums here, too; it's definitely time for me to change something.

The calculator debate has been going on for a long time. And I didn't
realize teachers would be asking students to pull out their smartphones for
the calculator feature - It still seems strange to me to think of young kids having cell phones. I often wonder what they'd need cell phones for, but I suppose they would be good for emergencies, as long as they're limited so
the kids won't be distracted by texting and checking Facebook & such all the time instead of focusing on their schoolwork.

I wonder if traditional calculators will end up disappearing in schools.
I've seen some nice-looking graphing calculator apps for
    smartphones/tablets, although I haven't played with them much. I used a TI-
89 while I was in college, and it served me well. I also had an HP 48G
during my last couple years of high school - I thought it was fairly nice,
but by the time I started college, I felt like it would be easier to own a
TI since TI calculators were so common, and students & instructors were more knowledge about the TI graphing calculators than any other brands.

I had an inspirational calc teacher who evangelized programmable calculators. His inspiration was that calculators could be programmed to do all of the menial work of calculation and free us up to do the creative work. Back then, the HP 41 series were king, maybe the HP 71 if your parents were really rich. I got my with a Casio.

    His tests "required" a calculator.

I work at a company and support multiple sites. It's amusing how inconsistent the bathrooms are.

One has a no-touch toilet, no-touch faucet, and air hand dryers, which can read fingerprints and be used to sample DNA and test for volatiles like explosives[1].

One of them has a crank towel dispenser, the other a touch dispenser. The one with a touch dispenser has a no-touch faucet, but you have to touch the toilet to flush it.

About 10 years ago, I worked with a really filthy, dirty man named Leroy. He used to pick his ears with pencils, then put the pencil back like nothing happened. He was not a hand-washer. How do I know?

One day, he came out of the bathroom with SHIT on his hand. I was like "Hey, uh, Leroy, uhm..." Then he ran to the bathroom and washed.

I think some people don't wash things until they are visually dirty.

I think that kind of thing is unbelievable.. After putting their hands in certain places or on certain things, why would someone not want to wash their hands afterwards?

At work, I've seen people leave the bathroom without washing their hands, and once was even someone who left a stall, not just a urinal.. When I leave public bathrooms, maybe I should start opening the door with a paper towel around my hand rather than using my bare hand on the door handle.

The calculator debate has been going on for a long time. And I didn't

I wonder if traditional calculators will end up disappearing in
schools. I've seen some nice-looking graphing calculator apps for smartphones/tablets, although I haven't played with them much. I used
a TI- 89 while I was in college, and it served me well. I also had an
HP 48G during my last couple years of high school - I thought it was fairly nice, but by the time I started college, I felt like it would be easier to own a TI since TI calculators were so common, and students & instructors were more knowledge about the TI graphing calculators than
    any other brands.

I know this is an old thread, but I just read it and Your mention of using
a HP 48G caused me to remember a person showing me the HP30?(HP-35? whatever) calculator his company bought for him that cost around $300.00 USD.
(this was around late 1960's - early 1970's)

To me, him showing me how to do RPN calculations (Reverse Polish Calculations) was very confusing, although he was very good at using it, as You probably
    were also.

When four function calculators started being sold in the department stores,
I would test them to see if I wanted to buy one by entering a calculation
to see if entering 1 / 64 would give me 0.015625 on the display.
Most of them didn't, they would display 0.02 .

I bought my first "four banger with Constant" in 1974 for $81.00 USD at
a Olson Electronics store in a shopping center.

A couple of years later My Mom bought all the grandkids a calculator for
a CHRISTmas gift, and it made my jaw drop when She told me the low price
She paid for those calculators. It was under Ten Dollars US.

About a year later I bought a Casio calculator with Memory for $18.00 .

A few years later K-Mart Stores sold a Texas Instruments TI-30 Scientific
Calc for around $30.00 USD and I HAD TO HAVE ONE, my wife finally yield.

It came with a book called "Math On Keys", and with that book I was able to figure out (a little bit) what TRIG was all about.
    It helped "Educate Ed".

I've drolled over Graphic calculators but haven't want to buy one.
But in 2012 at a Salvation Army Thrift Store I found a Book and CD to run
a program that simulated a TI-81 on my computer, and it had the book for a TI-81 TOO!

I don't run it much now but I did play with it for awhile, I even put the Program on this XP computer to run at a CMD Prompt.

You writing about the HP and TI calculators You used brought memories about

There was an interesting podcast about TI calculators and how they got into a virtual monopoly based on their use in school. Without those forces, the calculators would probably sell for a fraction of the price, or be replaced by a smartphone app.

I took a pre-calculus class in college that changed my life. The professor was an oddball who evangelized computers and programmable calculators. He thought they would do all of the busywork in math and free people to do the amazing, creative stuff. Our entire class was designed around any programmabla calculator, but seeing as we weren't as handheld as today's students (pun intended) we had to figure out how to program it ourselves and hge dealt with the algorithms.

We spent the semester plugging in equations into our calculators and plotting the results - this was before the graphing TIs, so we had HP 41s, HP 15s, and a variety of Casio and TI programmables.

This college had an interim semester during winter break. You could take a class 4 hours a day 5 days a week for 4 weeks and get a semester's credit. There were some screwball classes, like conversational French in France, my professor took a half-dozen kids on his sailboat and they navigated with sextants and HP calculators!

You gotta love a good calculator. I've got an HP 12C, bought it when I bought my first house and was shopping for mortgages. I bought a latr HP 10 B II, the algebraic kind, and it doens't compare for fit and quality.

There also was a accessory that let you transfer what was on the TI-82

TI LINK is cool. Weird cable support though. In most cases you need an RS-232 version (and then you have to use a USB->Serial connector, along with a special USB driver). I know there are some USB cables for TI LINK too, but they don't work with the older TI calcs.

But back in the 90s, just about every computer had the serial port and it worked well.

I wrote a BASIC program with 3 Variables where he could enter
the Mortage Amount, Number of Years and the Interest Rate as he talked

I used a formula I found in the TI-30 Math On Keys book to make the BASIC program for him.

He said having the program helped them out with purchasing their new home.

Wow awesome, sounds like you had some fun.

    Allen,

Now I think Common Core has messed up everything with math.

I have to wonder if the Abbott and Costello routines of "You have two
    10's for a 5??", and "13 times 7 is 28" gave Common Core ideas. :P

I have to admit though, those skits they did were hilarious.

Any male who lives with a female has the "toilet" war going on. Seat up seat down...

Close the lid and inconvenience both sexes.

You are a glutton for punishment, aren't you?? <G>
