From Xucaen@VERT/TIMEPORT to All on Monday, November 16, 2015 18:05:18
Hi, I've been googling for current BBS tools, such as a QWK offline mail reader and a nodelist viewer, but all I can find are old DOS tools from the BBS archives. I was hoping there might be some more modern-ish tools out there. Sure I can read the nodelist directly in Notepad and use the BBS to read/send messages (I'm doing it now ;-), but it would be nice to have these extra tools. (I recall back in 96 using Blue Wave with a tag line manager, I loved it!)

    Thanks!

The most modern QWK offline mail reader that I know of is MultiMail: http://freecode.com/projects/multimail

I haven't used a FidoNet nodelist in the past 20 years, so I don't know if there's modern software that parses/displays them. :-)

That's if you are using a javascript command shell, in my case, I am still using the default.src/bin baja command shell, in which case I use
EXEC_XTRN "mlprmpt" to use the editor that comes with nodeview. To use the FTN Nodelist viewer, I use EXEC_XTRN "nodeview". Both of which I have set up as externals, that are accessable from my email section. Their are many ways to do this, I chose chose to do it this way till all the bugs are worked out. Hope this helped.

In the Memories echo Kurt Weiske sent a post to me with a Link to
get Multimail for Windows v0.50 because I couldn't find it on
    Sourceforge. http://realitycheckbbs.org/mmwin050.zip
    HTH
    I'm using it on XP.

Thank you! it works well on Windows 7.. and no nag screen. ;-)

    You're Welcome!

Is there a way to change the quote character? I didn't see it in the
.rc or docs, but thought maybe there might be an undocumented option..

I looked at MM readme and the other MM text files and didn't see anywhere it mentioned how to change the quote character.

I looked at RFC 2047 mentioned in MMAIL.RC's "Use QPMailhead" option without seeing anything that would help You. Sorry I can't be of help.

SLMR (DOS) has a Qstring setting that is set to the > character that can be changed by the user.

I've ran SLMR on this XP pc but switched to MM because SLMR chokes up on messages over 150 lines in length.

There are Plus's and Minus's to both programs imnsho.

I used SEMPOINT for a while to read QWK messages but went back to using SLMR/MM.

    Thanks!

I am a Lurker here, and just thought I'd jump in and send that Link to You.
I use MMWIN just when I want to C&P something into what I'm writing.
It's easier to do in MMWIN that MMDOS that I use EDIT.COM in.

I will go back in to Lurker Mode soon.

    Are You a Canadian?
IIRC I think I've seen either WOT or Flagfox indicate Your website was in Canada, My memory might be mistaken though.

    nope i'm not canadian.

Does Your bbses.info use a server in Canada?

Flagfox still shows the IP Address is in Canada that's why I asked.

    No offense meant.

Hi, I've been googling for current BBS tools, such as a QWK offline mail reader and a nodelist viewer, but all I can find are old DOS tools from the BBS archives.

I remember when Windows BBS tools started coming around, like a Windows Bluewave offline reader -- they just didn't feel right to me. I want as close to that text-mode, green letters on a black background experience I was used to.

I do most of my BBSing in a virtual machine running a cut-down version of Windows XP. I doubt there's anything left to exploit in it. I use Multimail, an offline reader that runs in a text console, but it's 32-bit. An old DOS editor, Qedit works fine in the VM.

If you're looking for a more modern experience, your best bet is to find a BBS with NNTP access to the message areas and use a news reader. I miss the interactive experience when I do that, though.

I also tend to prefer the text mode when I use a BBS - But I'm curious, how do you feel like NNTP with a news reader is less interactive?

robert told me it was in the code section.

Or you could just as easily got to http://me.robertwolfe.org and download the precompiled binaries for your platform.

i just wanted to see where it was coming from.
i can compile my own binaries.
