Well, for wares, unless you're doing carrier stuff, torrents are usually the best way to go these days. I don't do warez though, too much good free/open- source stuff available to bother.

Torrents are probably the best free way to go about this right now, yes. However, there are many ISPs that are scanning for different torrents and they will flag you (at least Comcast will) and send you a nastygram if they catch you snagging anything where the source has sent out DMCA requests.
For the most recent blockbusters and shows that are coming out, the safest way you can go about things that I've found is by getting an account on easynews.com. It gives you full access to usenet binaries, and pieces the files together for you and all so that all you need to do is search for the title and/or episode number, and you'll find your hits. You mark 'em, throw 'em in your queue, and download from the website. You can configure it to send via SSL (no people spying on what you're downloading), and there's no way the ISPs can really know what you're up to other than downloading a .zip from somewhere.
Easynews does have a cost, but for $10-20 a month you can get up to like 20GB per month if I remember correctly. Those rates might even be a little bit high. If you're looking to avoid multiple notices from your ISP, though, it's a great way to go. I mean at some point they're gonna stop sending you nastygrams and cut you off or else serve you up on a platter to the hollywood companies looking to DMCA yr butt.
Just my $.02. I love easynews. It's great for all sorts of apps, games, etc, as well.
