how many of you guys are still loyal seagate customers?

i just had a drive fail after the warranty was over. i didnt really use
    the drive much.

i go on amazon and i see TONS of people complaining about these drives failing. they say there's some serial number sequences that are prone to fail. i know my warranty is up but i'm going to still try to get some help here.

i just bought a few 4tb drives and if i get pissed i'm going to send those back and get a refund.

Even though they replaced a faulty external for me for free, I still won't stick with them. The replacement drive also failed. As a result, I've been looking for hardware repair experts so I could salvage whatever data I can.

So far, I found a place that said they would charge a minimum of $200. If I would have left all my stuff on ANY of my internal HDs, I would have never
    had this problem.

Were your drives internal or external?

there is a 1-2 year warranty. there are many people who have the drive that i bought fail shortly after the warranty time expired. same with the 4tb drives i got.

I've had a pile of the 3TB drives fail. The old 1.5TBs were terrible as
well. We've got a bunch of 2TBs in service, and I've only got one 4TB in service, but so far so good. My experience with the "excessive" failures
of the 1.5 and 3TB units have steered me and my colleagues away from

there's a backup service named backblaze. they released their data on hd survival rates in 2014.

after 36 months, seagate had 73% survival, WD had 94.8, hitachi had 96.9 something is seriously wrong with seagate now.

When I built my current desktop PC (in 2011), I bought a Hitachi hard drive. Almost immediately it developed an issue where sometimes the drive wouldn't be recognized when my PC booted (along with a clicking noise). I eventually contacted Hitachi, and they replaced the drive under warranty. The new drive hasn't had any issues. And one nice thing is that by the time I contacted Hitachi, the previous drive must have been discontinued, so they sent me a bigger drive as a replacement (the older one was 1.5TB, and the replacement was 2.0TB).

Seagate's reputation for quality has haunted them since the days of MFM
    and
FLL drives. Their first really bad problem was with bad spindle lube on their 20 Meg MFM and FLL drives. They'd refuse to spin up in time to complete POST and would cause the computer to refuse to boot. The short term fix was to perform what I called the "7G sudden deceleration
maneuver." One did this by removing the drive from the computer and
    giving
it a "sturdy" whack on a table or other suitable surface. Upon re- installation the drive would perform as designed for some time before needing another "treatment."

FWIW, I've been a Western Digital advocate since the 1990's.

Damn.. I meant to type RLL not FLL. Damned typos!!!

I second that. The only issue I ever had with wd's drives was when a fellow computer tech punched the drive, and then send it back to wd with chunks of his flesh and a decent amount of his blood on it.

I had to remind him human blood is considered a biohazard...

Hmm, makes me think of calling poor old Brad Kankelfitz up and seeing how life has treated him...

    Anywayz, I digress.

i just had a drive fail after the warranty was over. i didnt really use
    the drive much.

I had one of the first generation 500gig external USB drives. It was mapped as a drive letter
on a XP computer. Connected Via IP to my 2 Linux Samba servers. somebody shut off the XP
computer. Mean while the drive got lost in what it was doing and sat there trying to do something
got in some kind of loop. Maybe it was looking for the XP box not sure. It almost caught fire as
in smoke started rolling out of it. I smashed it on the sidewalk because of the eight year
collection of stuff.. never really had any where else to put all the data. I still find bits and
pieces of the data spread out on older drives. But it was a major loss for me. Funny thing was a
friend told me the drive was probably still good but the board was bad. He was stating excessive
use will cause some of the boards in the case to go bad on usb drives. I have 10,000 RPM drives in
this computer. After the last failure I now run a LVM Raid 2 setup. Hope to be able to slide in a
new one and watch it rewrite itself.

well i cried like a little bitch on amazon and the seagate contact that commented on all the complainer's threads told me to do a link to my post and then email seagate.

then i called them up and gave them my ticket number and
they are sending me a 4TB drive to replace my bad 3TB drive. when i bought my 3tb drive it was much more expensive than my 4tb drive i just got, but it's better than nothing.

i still have to send them my 3tb drive. i do not have to pay shipping for the 4tb drive. they say that's usually 14 dollars.

my next drives i buy will be hitachi becuase they seem to have less prominent failure rate.

From my limited experience (I started computing on a Commodore PET) I've
found that generally the denser data is packed on a drive the less reliable
the drive becomes. Several years ago back when I was selling used Sun workstations on eBay between my friend that helped me out and myself we had 4 sun 30 drive RAID enclosures. These could only use 3 different size drive, either 1G,4G, or 9G. Mine were fully populated, one with 1G drives, the other with 4G drives. My friend had one fully populated with 4G drives, and the
other only partially populated with 9G drives. Well the most stable RAID was the one populated with 1G drives, I had it running connected to a SparcServer 2000 with zero drive failures for well over a year and a half. the other 3
all had drive failures during the time we used them. That computer also had another drive enclosure that held 6 5.25" full height drives that were 9G
each, but I didn't run them as a RAID, but rather spread out the installation of Solaris on to 2 of them. I can't remember the exact fs layout, I'm getting away from the topic of discussion I think, but those 6 drives while also
being SCA-SCSI drives like the ones that went into the 30 drive enclosures,
the 30 drive enclosure used 3.5" half height, so the 9G drives to go into the 30 drive enclosure had the data density much higher than did the drives that went into the 6 drive housing. I don't know if that's why the 5.25" 9G drives were more reliable, but it's as good a reason as I could think of.
