• Android Tradewars Mobile App

From KenDB3@VERT/KD3NET to All on Friday, May 15, 2015 22:38:37
Someone at work showed me this, and I thought some folks here might find this interesting. An Android app that is (to quote the author), "a fully ANSI.SYS compatible Telnet helper for playing Tradewars 2002."

wow. must be a real TW fan to go to this kind of effort just to bring TW to android.

These kinds of things bode well for bringing more attention to the BBS world though.

well, tradewars players have no interest in bbses or playing on bbses.
it's even worse when they use those trainers, because they essentially play the game for them.

I'm wondering, why only a TradeWars app? If they're making something that's ANSI-compatible, why not make a general BBS telnet app? Then you could use it to play TradeWars or any other BBS game. Unless I'm missing something..

I didn't know you could play trade wars outside of a bbs platform..

I learn something new everyday it seems.

Funny you say that, because the same developer made this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hordeq.ansiterminalmobile

I saw the ANSI Terminal Mobile app before, and didn't even think about whether it was the same developer until you said that.

I have not tried either one myself, but the guy at work who tried the Tradewars one said he liked it.

Nice. It looks like someone finally made a BBS-friendly telnet client for Android. I'll have to give that a try.

Let me know how it goes, if you do. I'd certainly spend $1.00 on a good client.

tradewars has nothing to do with bbses now. it has not had anything to do with bbses since the 90s

when i was on the tw forums people thought bbses were old and didnt even think they were worth calling. they want tradewars and that's why they use specific tw clients.

I installed the ANSI terminal app. First thing I notice is that it only supports landscape mode, so I have to hold my phone sideways to use it.. I connected to my BBS with it and got the non-ANSI interface. Apparently my BBS didn't recognize it as an ANSI-capable client.

ftelnet and bbsnexus have android apps that work well

I'm not going to be developing the native client for Android any further...working with flash builder is just too annoying.

http://my.ftelnet.ca is a pretty good alternative (imho anyway). I don't have many Android devices to test with, nor do I have any iOS devices to test with, so I'm pretty much reliant on other people testing it out and letting me know if anything needs to be fixed/improved.

Only thing to note is that the native Android browser only recently got WebSocket support, so you may need to use Chrome or Firefox instead. Safari has supported it for a really long time though, so iOS users are good.
