Synchronet builds and runs on Linux (as well as FreeBSD and Windows) and Linux runs on Raspberry Pi.

The RPi2 is a supported platform. I have one here on my desk, so if there are any RPi2 specific bugs, I can fix/test them here.

The single-core RPis are not supported though, IMO, they don't have enough memory or oomph.

theres a pi version of synch?

Yes. It builds easily, just make sure you get all the prerequisites. There is also a binary available as well. I'm just running it on a Raspberry Pi (1) and it runs well enough for me. Truthfully, my "board" is mainly just for me to read the messages and sometimes post, although I plan on configuring it out later. I just have it running stock at the moment. I have the board installed on top of OSMC (Open Source Media Center, RC2), which is basically a customized Kodi. I prefer the Confluence interface, which is easy to change to. I really like OSMC as it found not only my WIFI dongle (Bolse 300 mbs/s), but also found my bluetooth dongle right away too. I use a Bluetooth keyboard. I will be upgrading to a Raspberry Pi (2). It is due to arrive on Saturday. I haven't started any configuration yet for that reason too, waiting on the RPi2. Debated back and forth between a RPi(2) and an ODROID-U3, but went with the RPi(2). By specs. the ODROID should be blasting the RPi(2) out of the water, but folks are reporting that XBMC/KODI runs better on the RPi(2). Plus, I figured the RPi has a larger userbase, so went with that.

If you don't have a RPi yet, definetly should get the RPi(2). Just get a good powersupply (supplying at least 2A). With the RPi(1), I had to get a USB Hub (Rosewell RHUB-210, which I highly recommend) in order to get more USB ports and have a decent powersource. With the RPi(2), it has enough USB ports that you shouldn't need a USB hub.

The RPi's are wonderful devices. They bring the fun back to computing and help teach the fundamentals of computers to kids.

    Cheers,
    Misfit

Just remember to use the VirtIO networking drivers, or any BBS you run will have horrid network latency (the emulated network adapters are apparently crap, VirtIO basically streams data from the hdd to the network I guess. Works much better.)

Check out Qemu, you can run i386 stuff on other processors... Or I just rent a VPS, upload my Qemu + disk images, and I'm in business minutes later. And rsync back home to keep backups. I've moved hosting providers 7 times in the last 4 years and it's worked out pretty well.

I scored a core2 box with 8GB of ram that I rent for $35 a month. it's more than enough for my crap. I like the idea that it's in a data centre, so it's got good power, cooling, and a stable internet connection.

But at the same time for work, I keep our exchange server local to the office, but use a VPS to relay email in and out, and proxy remote access as I don't want people to hit our business address directly. So they all have their plusses and minuses.

you should probably try it with dosemu first.

i wouldnt waste your time on fidonet. i put it up a few times and not only did i constantly have feed problems (i got fed from some people that were with fidonet for a very long time), it just wasnt worth it. same handful of people, same type of discussions, same low amount of traffic.

I believe Dosemu requires an actual physical hardware x86 onboard to work. There is another emulator in early stages of development rpix86 that may be worth researching. Re: Fido. Yeah, you are right. After reading a bit, doesnt seem worth the time. The echoes I used to like are long gone. It appears
only be popular in eastern Europe/Russia these days. Will look into maybe Usenet....

I'm pretty sure qemu works on other platforms.

Fido has some activity on the backbone echoes, but there are so many dead echoes it's almost impossible for a newcomer to find the areas.
