I just keep waiting for a renaissance of BBSes to take off.

    This is it!

I remember Digital Man commenting around the time he gave up on the commercial success of Synchronet that if there were a future in BBS's as we knew them, Microsoft would have been competing in the market. I've been running Crystal Aerie since the the mid 80's at which time they were really leading edge. The World Wide Web was not even quite emerging as a force and it required as much work as BBS's. There was no common broadband implementation and the "theoretical limit" of speed over POTS was 2400 baud. Of course that kept creeping up as the limits kept getting cracked.

In any case, I'm still running my BBS out of nostalgia and the for the handful of people who still "call."

I just came across a July 1995 "Fast Forward" magazine. That was the Washington Post's monthly technology guide. It's feature article was "Free!" It covered free internet access, mostly through electronic bulletin boards. Crystal Aerie was mentioned in a little paragraph. We had four dial up lines at the time and were busy almost 24/7. It was about a break-even proposition for me as I took donations to help pay the phone bills and buy door software. I didn't always cash the checks.

In the same issue, the Washington Post was advertising for beta testers for their new online service called "Digital Ink." You had to have a 386 computer, 8 MB RAM, a 9600 "baud" modem, Windows 3.1 and a whopping 10 MB of free space on your hard drive. You signed up by telephoning or faxing your information and they would send the software in about three weeks. This was only 20 years ago, folks.

Oh well, in another 20 years we'll be looking back and wondering how we managed with today's primitive technology.

    Hi Nightfox!

When I search for BBS, I also get a lot of results for BBS Wheels. I
just tried doing a Google search for BBS now though, to see what I'd
get, and the first page has some relevant links - in fact, starting
with the 3rd link on the first page:
    - Wikipedia's article on bulletin board systems
    - BBS software - SourceForge.net
    - Mystic BBS software
    - SyncTERM Home Page
    - BBS: The Documenatry

The BBS Corner is also on the first page of search results (it's the
    last link though).

Several modern BBS packages already do that - Synchronet, for one, has
a built-in web server. It has a stock web site implementation, but
it's possible possible for someone to modify it into however they want.

How's things going for you? It's been awhile.

    Sincerely,

I think we've come a long way from local only email, then daily dialup relay email, then true internet email, usergroups, IRC, 24/7 connectivity with the cellphones and tablets, the rise of social media, video streaming, and much more I'm not remembering or too lazy to type. This was all in the lifetime of today's high school students. Before that we all had to look things up using an archaic technology called books.
