I just keep waiting for a renaissance of BBSes to take off.
This is it!
I remember Digital Man commenting around the time he gave up on the commercial success of Synchronet that if there were a future in BBS's as we knew them, Microsoft would have been competing in the market. I've
Oh well, in another 20 years we'll be looking back and wondering how we managed with today's primitive technology.

When I search for BBS, I also get a lot of results for BBS Wheels. I
just tried doing a Google search for BBS now though, to see what I'd
get, and the first page has some relevant links - in fact, starting
with the 3rd link on the first page:
- Wikipedia's article on bulletin board systems
- BBS software - SourceForge.net
- Mystic BBS software
- SyncTERM Home Page
- BBS: The Documenatry
The BBS Corner is also on the first page of search results (it's the
last link though).
Several modern BBS packages already do that - Synchronet, for one, has
a built-in web server. It has a stock web site implementation, but
it's possible possible for someone to modify it into however they want.

i'm so sick of the words oldschool and retro that they are just empty words to me now.
Re: Re: Any sign of a BBS ren
your information and they would send the software in about three weeks.
This was only 20 years ago, folks.

I don't know about "commercial" success but it certainly is a HUGE success i my book. My hat's off to Digiatl Man, and Duece and I see some new faces around lately too as well as quite a few in the BBS scene who just stick wit it. I still think BBSs are the best thing since sliced bread.. :)
i'm not so sure of that. in 20 years, yes we've had advances but just seems me it's mostly cellphones and tablets. things could have really advanced a further.
and much more I'm not remembering or too lazy to type. This was all in the lifetime of today's high school students. Before that we all had to look things up using an archaic technology called books.

if you didnt do any of that, you wouldnt last. i worked on my bbs for months
before it went public back in the dialup days.
Me, too -- discovered Classic Doom 3, the first chapter of DOOM (Knee
Deep In The Dead) redone with the DOOM 3 engine. Very fun!

I had no intention of starting a debate with my comment. Just reminiscing a bit. I agree that Synchronet is a huge technical success and has given many of us a lot of fun over the years. Synchronet has better support than some commercial programs and it's truly freeware (although I paid for it years ago). So I too salute Rob for his efforts and product.

I've never heard of that. I must go check it out.. :)
And, now I'm done with Knee Deep in the Dead. Wish they would do episodes 2 and 3.
Time to try it in nightmare mode now.

Dude, you got a battle.net id? Since I got into father mode about the
only thing I play is Diablo3 and Heroes of the Storm. We should at
least get on each others friends list and play sometime. I have a key
for Heroes, it's very fun and easy to play.

I think we've come a long way from local only email, then daily dialup relay email, then true internet email, usergroups, IRC, 24/7 connectivity with the cellphones and tablets, the rise of social media, video streaming, and much more I'm not remembering or too lazy to type. This was all in the lifetime of today's high school students. Before that we all had to look things up using an archaic technology called books.

But we already had a lot of that 20 years ago. I remember streaming live vi (much more impressive than downloading a buffered video off Youtube) from TV (ZDTV, to be exact) 16 years ago.
Heck, almost 30 years ago, the Amiga could be used for video editing.

You've warmed the cockles of my heart. Man I miss the Amiga.

One of my local public access TV channels occasionally drops into a
Guru Mediation screen in the morning before the crew gets in and
reboots it.
