• Interesting to See These sites are still used

I almost thought that I would be on here.. check all the messages and find that the conversations dropped off a year ago. Glad to see there is still a point to checking out retro sites like this. Chatlines are all but useless these days, and social media sites don't get me started. But to see that the last message sent on this BBS was only yesterday gives me great hope. Still not sure what the purpose is on here, aside from a general purpose chat bulletin. But glad to see that there are still users :) .. Anyone want to chat send me a message, however that happens.. I'm still trying to figure it out.. I got turned onto BBS's playing an Abandonware game on DOSbox. Cant quite remember the name of it, but it definitely peaked my interest.
Also if anyone can give me pointers on how to best use this program, maybe there is a better program to interface with the board than telnet? Few glitches here and there in terms of speed etc. One time the terminal can keep up with me no problem then I do something else come back to it and I have to wait while my PC (maybe telnet) catches up with my keystrokes. Regardless, I believe this may be my favourite connection to the outside world, that is aside from actually gonig outside.. :P

    Welcome to the party!

Depends on which terminal software you are using in terms of any advice, but I'd highly recommend trying SyncTerm. For full effect set it to fullscreen sdl overlay :)

My best advice is to check a few different boards out and see what tickles your fancy. Message networks like Dove and Fidonet are great for finding kindred spirits for your interests, and door games are great fun and good for a retro kick. Try out some inter-bbs games for more of a team feel.

The biggest thing to remember about getting into BBS-ing is that there can be a bit of a learning curve as you figure out how various systems work, and what you do and don't like in a system. Some are geared more towards messages, some more towards games, and some to specific interests. Also some boards are reasonably stock, some are very modified in look and feel. Play around! ---------------

One option with Synchronet atleast (not sure about other BBS software) is
most have a web interface enabled.. for example going to http://rdnetbbs.com will give a person access to the message bases and be able to send messages
and more without ever going on telnet. I use it alot when I am using only my phone when I am not around home.

That would be nice. I've used the ftelnet html5 version on my website on my iphone which works pretty decently.

It's equally old school, but I like to use a QWK reader; there are several free client out there, including MultiMail.

With a QWK reader, you telnet to a board and download a packet of messages, then open them in the QWK reader, which runs locally. With a QWK reader, you can skip around messages and areas, and enter messages using a local text editor.

Once you've finished the packet, you upload a reply packet to the BBS. The BBS imports your messages and updates your message pointers.

While I like reading messages on the BBS, it's nice to play catch-up with QWK

Looking now; I'm switching to Android after being a long-time iPhone user.
