• When it rains it pours

From Khelair@VERT/TINFOIL to All on Friday, March 06, 2015 21:13:21
I just had to take a minute to share some good fortune with y'all. I've been working on getting into IT work the entire time that I've been here, which is going on 7-8 months now. Although I've courted a few recruiters, I've really had no luck whatsoever. I managed to get one food service job, and the place was so terrible that I was thankful when they fired me for getting sick during my probationary period.
So I've been getting social assistance, being a single parent, and looking for work full time. Like 30-40 hours a week, quite literally. Nothing, week after week, month after month. Then today I'm supposed to hear back about a job that said they'd hire me, based on whether or not I can get a clearance badge to work in the secure area of the airport, and that works out *does happy dance*. Just got word on that today.
The other thing that I was waiting for today was a phone interview for an IT position that I was recommended for by another developer that I know. Lo and behold, _it frigging worked out_. I can't drop any names or anything, but I've been tossed a couple of projects to work on with somebody else, and provided those [relatively simple] ones work out, a lot more work will be coming my way on an awesome contractual basis, as well.
I just had to share this with everyone. It's been really hard keeping my spirits up with this, and fighting sickness off and on, and then in one day it's like everything changes. I'm still hedging my bets in case of disaster, but things look really good right now. :) Funny, because one of my lazery friends today told me that today was a good day for a Libra, and then I get all of this wonderful info in a short duration of time, and after a damn good bike ride, to boot. ;)
Hope y'all are doing well, also. Best wishes, everyone.

That's great! I'm happy for you.

I know how tough it is to get inito the IT world. I've been in IT for 20 years, and my current contract postition ending in a few weeks. I've been searching for my next role for about 8 months. I've been doing linux admin
for about 15 of those 20 years, and it still took about 8 months to land my next job.

Damn. I wouldn't have expected that. That's kind of scary. Heh. I'm planning on saving every little bit of my income that doesn't go to necessities for awhile anyway, though. I've been playing the poverty game for far too long to not make sure that I've got a good amount saved up in case of hardship in the future. ;)
Hope that wait is shorter next time around!

Absolutely and for sure. Though, having a little one to share it with makes it all the more worthwhile. If it was just me I'd be happy being a beach bum up & down the coast. Can't do that with a kid, though. ;)

I've considered getting some certifications, but I hear mixed reviews on how effective they are for helping with hiring. One thing I've also been
thinking of doing is taking some online courses at the local community
college. They have a number of IT courses that last 5 weeks, and only cost $110 each. Beginning Java programming, Networking, computer repair, etc.
All those individual courses can be had for cheap.

Well I know in a place like North Dakota, certs made all of the difference. Out here (Portland), I've heard that they don't make a tin shit of difference and that it's who you know... After seven months of looking and finally picking something up here I would tend to agree with that. They certainly couldn't hurt, but whether or not they'll be effective in getting you employed seems to be a matter of the local culture.
