• SyncTERM + BBSDEV.NET + BBS-Scene.org Sites Down?

    From Telerophon@VERT/PHARCYDE to Agoranet.BBSDiscussion,Dovenet.General,Fidonet.BBS-SCENE,Zeronet.BBS_Scene on Sunday, February 01, 2015 02:24:16
    Hey All,

I was surfing the other day and somehow noticed that bbsdev.net along
with all of its subdomains, including the sites for SyncTERM, SyncDRAW,
Door projects, DOSbox resources, et cetera all appear to be down.

This led me to some concerns and a couple of questions. Does anyone know
what's going on there? Is this a small hiccup, or do we need to chip in
and do something to keep that from being a lost resource?

Also, should we coordinate a little and try to mirror the files?

I have a local copy of the Roughnecks Win32 Installer for
SyncTERM 0.9.5b as well as local copies of a later compiled Win32
executable for 1.0b. However, I never did have copies of SyncDRAW or any
    other utilities/tools produced by deuce.

Incidental, I also noticed that bbs-scene.org (along with diskshop.ca)
    isn't responding. Hrm.

Anyway, I just wanted to check in and see if everything's okay out there
and if we as a community can do anything to help. If some of those sites
are gone for good, I can start uploading what I had to some file areas
at least. I hope nothing is gone for good.

this has been an ongoing thing. he decides to run everything at home and just can't keep it up. people have offered this and that but he's pretty dismissive about having someone host for him or just have someone give him access to a server or a vm.

there's some stuff from last summer on sourceforge for syncterm. there's a windows binary and src code.

anyways, i wouldnt worry about it. he'll probably put it up again eventually. and it'll go down again. he should just spend a couple of bucks and get a cheap shared webhost for the files.

    that's too bad, bro!

I really need to update the windows installers for mtelnet and syncterm... for a newer dialup list... thinking of throwing roughneck bbs back up again (probably on digital ocean), I took my home servers down a few months ago,
just wasn't worth the cost of the business connection, and didn't have the
time to dedicate to fixing the BBS (the VM was corrupt and constantly crashing).

there's some stuff from last summer on sourceforge for syncterm. there's a windows binary and src code.

IIRC the binaries for syncterm are on sourceforge, no idea if that's still current... again, need to update the installers.

Noticed that vert has rlogin directly into the doors, which is pretty cool.. been wanting to do something like that for quite a while.

I noticed bbs-scene was down when I tried to connect to the irc service a couple weeks ago.

Been working to get all my ansi files from misc backups, and some via sixteencolors.net ... got most of them sorted over this past weekend... here's hoping I can find the time and motivation to actually get it all done. Also have been experimenting a bit with a shim over socat+dosbox for a door server, which may actually work.

Actually, Mro is an idiot and that system doesn't run at my home (hasn't for years). I'm only dismissive of Mro since he's proven himself to be an insufferable moron.

I eat my own dogfood though. I wrote the Synchronet web server, and so when I need a web server, I use the one I wrote. If it has problems, these are problems with Synchronet, and I find out about them. Mro thinks I should run something else and just foist and untested webserver on Synchronet sysops.

This most recent batch of downtime appears to be due to the memory requirements
of the forum scripts that came with the version of ecWeb I'm running on that system. Further, there appears to be insufficient information about memory usage available to sysops so they can troubleshoot the issue. The reason it's causing Synchronet to stop running is that I have constrained that system specifically to discover these limits... something else Mro thinks is of no value. Everyone should run Synchronet on a system with 96GB of RAM and 16 cores (the specs of the system I run my test BBS on).

I'm working on both problems. If I didn't run Synchronet and ecWeb on that system, nobody would know about the issues and they would never be fixed. Mro thinks that is how I should run my systems. He's wrong.

For memory constrained systems, it's starting to look like we're going to need a way to dynamically restrict sessions based on usage. This is a Hard Problem.
Most "obvious" ways of doing this reward the abusers and punish people who are using less resources.

Another example is the recent changes to the FTP index scripts. They would cause Google (and any other bot that indexes FTP sites) to infinately crawl the
Synchronet FTP server. This has been fixed now. For most users, simply blocking Googlebot is sufficient, but if other bots start doing the same things, Sysops will need to constantly chase new bots... or they would have if we didn't run systems where these problems show up.

anyways, i wouldnt worry about it. he'll probably put it up again eventually. and it'll go down again. he should just spend a couple of bucks and get a cheap shared webhost for the files.

So that nobody would ever see or solve the problems that come from using Synchronet for this.
