• GCW-Zero open-source handheld game console

From Nightfox@VERT/DIGDIST to All on Saturday, January 31, 2015 16:32:57
Recently I bought one of these GCW-Zero devices:
    http://www.gcw-zero.com/
    http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/168f/
It arrived today, and I started playing with it a bit. These are open-source, and there's a community of developers and emulators, etc. for it. So far, I've installed emulators for NES and SNES on it, and they seem to work well so far. This should be fairly fun, being able to play lots of classic games on a handheld device, with physical buttons (rather than having to use a touch screen on a smartphone).

that looks cool. it just isnt the same when you are playing these old games on an emulator on your desktop computer. this might bridge the gap.

I've installed some more game ROMs onto it today. Overall it works fairly well, although I've noticed a few glitches here and there with a couple games. The Game Boy Advance emulator I found, in particular, seems to be fairly buggy. It's fun to be able to play all the NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, etc. games I remember playing back in the day on a handheld game device.

I don't really mind playing emulators on a computer though, especially with a controller.

There are some emulators for Windows I've seen with some nifty features, such as multiplayer over the internet. I'll have to see if any of the emulators for this device support that.

Any feedback on how well does it'll handle SNES/Super Fami games with special chipsets (SD Gundam GNext, Tengai Makyo Zero, etc)?

I haven't tried yet, as I heard that the SNES emulator I'm using on it (snes9x) doesn't support special chipsets. I specifically saw that Starfox wasn't supported, but other emulators (such as PocketSNES) might be able to at least run Starfox.

Ah, gotcha. I haven't used Snes9x in years (prefer ZSNES myself), will check out the link you provided.

I'm not sure if ZSNES is available for the GCW-Zero. Doing a quick search, I found something saying zsnes uses some x86 assembly code, so it's not very portable.

I just tried playing Starfox with the SNES9X emulator on the GCW-Zero, and it appears to work.
