.: The Pi BBS Project :.

I had an idea to run a BBS from the raspberry Pi.
Nothing new in that?, there are other people out there on the net that have done just that.
    BUT keep reading !!!

I bought one to have a mess and play on a while back, an easy GUI system that was not expensive.
Just plug n play to put it an easy way.

So looking round the web there are loads and loads of Raspberry Pi projects and bits of information scattered all over the net.

So here is what I was thinking.....
Why not put ALL this information in one place AND do it on a Raspberry Pi as a BBS.
The Raspi would be powered by another project, A power project that's on the net to power the Raspi off a battery charged up by Solar & Wind. (And we have LOADS of wind)

I got on the phone and started to make a few phone calls, I managed to get a company to “Sponsor” a Raspberry Pi Kit and that has now been delivered and setup, updated and upgraded.
The Kit had a Raspberry Pi, Keyboard, Mouse, 8Gb (10) SD Card, Case,Powered USB Hub & Wifi adaptor.
I have also been donated a small USB Hard Drive (1Tb) to store all the data on.

The Raspberry Pi will be installed at Malin Head. The most northern tip of Ireland. (3000Ft ASL)
At the top, is a huge 60Ft mast owned by a Wireless Internet Company, They have said they will “donate” the Internet / Bandwidth for the project & we can use the hut at the bottom of the mast to house the equipment. This is a secure hut surrounded with security fence etc.

Along with information about the Raspberry Pi & projects we will also be putting historic data about Malin Head & also about Marconi's first tans-atlantic broadcasts were done. (The buildings he used are still there)

This project is also being supported by Malin Head Historical Sociality who will be building a new visitor centre in the summer.
This will also house some information on the Raspberry Pi & BBS Systems to promote them.

So the system will be promoting The Raspberry Pi, BBS's & Malin Head!

Now here is my problem.... :(
I don't know much about Linux let alone setting up a BBS on it.
I know a few basic commands (Apt-Get etc)
Is there anyone that can give me some step by step commands on how to setup this project or advice on what BBS Software to use to use? I was thinking Synchronet.

It needs to have Telnet, Web Interface, Message System & FTP Server.
Any and all help on this project would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for your time in reading this message

That sounds like an awesome project! I have pictures from Cape Cod, Massachusetts at Marconi Beach. I visited there last summer with my family. I got to see a lot of the equipment in the Marconi museum and see some of the original site of the other end of that trans-atlantic broadcast.

Sorry I don't have any advice or help, I just felt compelled to comment.
That's really pretty cool. Have fun with it, and hopefully some folks here can help you out. :-)

    Hi Raven,

I was originally gonna run Synchronet on my raspberry pi and I cant remember whether I couldnt get it working or whether it was actually compatible with Synchronet but whatever happend it never worked.

I just googled it now and I have found that you can try MysticBBS which claims to be compatible with the raspberry pi ("http://mysticbbs.com/"). I never tried Mystic BBS but its worth a go I suppose. I`ll look into Synchronet a bit more!

I run Mystic on the Pi. I've been able to compile and install Synchronet as well. I've also got DayDream BBS installed and running, and the Python-based x/84 BBS package. Has anybody tried MBSE?

I just followed the steps for unix/linux. But you have to use make, not
gmake. I also comiled it WITHOUT dosemu support.

Synchronet works on the RPi. This is a RPi :)
I just downloaded the source, probably using the cvs, or wget or something (it's on the documentation) and then compiled it, and it ran.
