My memories go back as far as 1990, just after I got my first computer in 1989. I had been given a second hand 1200 baud modem. The one that had the telephone and you had to have a Mode 3 Adapter just to connect it to the phone line. I used to have to run my communications program, in my case Telemate, pick up the phone, dial the number and when the modem on the othe end picked up and started it's connection, I had to press a button on the phone to change the call to the modem. Once connected, it was a case of BBS away..

After a few months, I picked up alot about BBS's and I was asked if I would be the CO-Sysop for a Brisbane based BBS called "Game-A-Holic BBS". The owner went away for a few days at a time and so he needed a CO-Sysop. I did this for about 2 years. Then, when he closed that BBS, I was just a regular user.

I posted alot of messages in the Star Trek Fido Mail areas, as well as following the day to day posts about NASA updates by Hugh S. Gregory (whom I met when he was here in Brisbane for a few hours changing planes in about 2001).

Then I dissappeared for many years as the Internet took over. But one day, I was looking at old BBS links on Google and I discovered that BBSs were still around, beit on Telnet. So, I am back. Have been for about 3 years.

My BBS located at casper.homeip.net is nothing fancy. It only has 2 users, myself and a test account. I only have it so I can get DoveNet mail. I have very few files on it and no doors except any that come with Synchronet.

I have many fond memories of BBSs from the good ol days. They were a life giving entity for me as they gave/give me people to talk to. I have been single most of my life and I prefer it this way, safer. So, the BBS is my lifeline.

    Jeff in Brisbane, Australia.

Im looking into the history of the BBS scene.
I would be interested in all your personal stories of how you got into BBSes and how things have changed over the years also what do you see as the future of the BBS will be.

I got my first computer in 1992 when I was 12, a hand-me-down IBM PC compatible, along with a 2400bps modem. I got a copy of a local BBS list as a text file that was maintained by someone in my area, and that summer, I would often start calling BBSes around 9:00 PM and sometimes stay up until around 1:00 or 2:00 AM on various boards, exploring and mainly looking for cool files to download and looking at message boards. Most of the time, I used BBSes for file exchange (I'd often look for new games to play and utility software for my PC), multi-node chat, and sometimes the message boards. There was also a local computer magazine that had a list of BBSes in the back, and I often used that as a reference, in addition to the BBS list text file that was updated regularly.

From what I remember, popular BBS software packages in my area were RemoteAccess, Wildcat, Spitfire, MajorBBS, WWIV, Maximus, Telegard, Searchlight, and maybe others. I remember the multi-node chat on MajorBBS boards, in particular, having more drama than others for some reason.

I played with some BBS packages around 1992 but didn't really understand enough to know what I was doing. WWIV was simple enough for me to get going though, but I didn't do anything serious with it at the time. It wasn't until 1994 when I ended up starting my own BBS, using RemoteAccess. I always enjoyed running a BBS and customizing it, and seeing people call in and use it. I eventually got my BBS onto FidoNet in 1998, but in 2000 I decided to take my BBS down since it wasn't getting much use at all anymore, and since the internet had become popular, I thought BBSes had become obsolete. At that point, I didn't think anyone would want to use a BBS anymore. I had heard of people linking their BBS to the internet so that people could telnet into their BBS, but at the time I wondered why people might do that when internet access allowed access to things like the web, etc..

I was totally out of the BBS scene until 2007, when I stumbled across a documentary about BBSes by Jason Scott, called "BBS: The Documentary". After watching that, I was inspired to look up the state of BBSing over the internet and found that some BBSes were still being run on the internet, accessible via telnet. Then I got the itch to run a BBS again - I initially started setting up a BBS using EleBBS, which was a modern clone of RemoteAccess (which I was familiar with). I found an issue with EleBBS not running timed events (at least, not the way I expected), so I decided to look and see what other BBS software was available, and I found Synchronet. I thought Synchronet looked really good, and eventually I switched to that. I got it set up and customized as closely as my previous BBS as possible, and I brought it online in May 2007 with the same name as my old BBS (Digital Distortion). I'm still running it today, and I still enjoy it.

Its nice to hear how people got into BBSes, As I said to Nightfox I spent my youth on Radio BBS systems so realy missed out on the full thing but i always feel a bit sorry i was not born a few years before so i could take advantage of the good times people had on here, I know they still do !!

I think things will start to change again within the next 5 years

I bought a copy on DVD, but I remember reading somewhere on it that its copyright statement gives permission for it to be freely copied and distributed. I think it's pretty cool that someone made a documentary about BBSes - I figured most people had forgotten about BBSes by then.

I guess I'm an old-timer. I started on BBSs in 1984. Probably the first few systems I called were hosted on Apple IIs. I had a Commodore 64 for most of my earlier computing.

BBSs were the one thing that lit a fire and obsession for computing. For others it was programing or games. For me it was BBSs.

I read something about necroposting being against etiquette, is that something the general community has a problem with? I would expect some slack where the traffic is so low.

I was part of the BBS scene starting some time in '82 or maybe '83. Local at first. Later I gained access to a WATS line. Eventually my brother stumbled on an X.25 PAD, but that is a longer story.

Some things about BBS culture haven't been well documented, AFAIK.

More later, assuming I don't get flamed.

well this msg network doesnt really have low traffic.

regarding necroposting, it's best when you get on a bbs and decide to post msgs to set your msg pointers within the last couple of weeks and do a newscan.

there are some exceptions, but replying to a six month post is usually not a good thing. the guy you are replying to is probably gone and wont be back in most cases.

i'm not talking about you specifically, i dont know what you are
replying to exactly. i think this guy had some story that he was doing research for a company about bbses.

    Thanks.

The bit which didn't make it into the BBS documentary, and which I haven't noticed anywhere, is the evolution of leet speak.

It was fairly common for character echo to be enabled for the remote end (the BBS) to do echo. That allowed for things like animated prompts.

Some enterprising coder figured out they'd add a feature to censor words being typed into bulletins or messages, *as they were being typed*. To get around that limit, people started using alternate spellings for words like warez or phuck, etc.

There was also a lowest common denominator effect to particular 'platforms' created by a given model of 'home computer'. If you owned a C64 for example, you could walk up to any other, and it would work the way you expected. Something we no longer have with every system being unique.

I seem to recall that it was one of the boards written in BASIC, on the C64. But it also may have been on an Atari.

What is necroposting..?? (All I can think about is those nasty "candy wafers" we got when we were kids, yeuchhhh!)

Necroposting generally refers to replying to dead threads and old messages. ---

You seem to have a lot of disdain for many of the people you talk to. If people really bother you that much, perhaps you should avoid situations that require social interaction with other people.

I was'nt back into the BBS scene two days before he started crap with me for no

i dont think he was talking about dave kelso.

Oh yes, I was.., even through some of the Stuff Dave posted back in the day i tried to hang with him and take up for him, Then he showed me what kinda real prick he could be to stab one of his only supporters in the back. I believe everyone deserves redemption, and I Hope he's found his. I have'nt talked to him in over 10 years.

and I AM a drug addict, and have been clean for over 5 years, something I will never be embarresed about, and would LOVE to speake to ANYONE about, because the YEARS of shit I have been through have made me that much stronger, now I mentor other drug addicts and help to fight off their demons. need any help?

I've never received a free computer from anyone, I don't know where that came from, I had some guy offer me computer parts for some reason or another, but I didnt need anyone elses junk, I had enough of my own, you can play the judgement game all you want, I own up to my addiction, I now have power over drugs, and it's not the other way around. You need to stop for a couple seconds
and take a good look at yourself in the mirror. Anyone who would give someone greif over drug addiction who has not harmed you in any way has some very serious issues, much worse than drug addiction could ever be.

YES I had a problem with drugs, but not enough to want to steal, pawn, or hurt other people, I paid my pentance for my problems, I could have taken the easy way out and spend 45 days in jail, but I did not, I chose to take Drug Court so
I could clear my record, I guarantee you could'nt make it through it. It is two
years of hell. and I have gained much from it, I was working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, received my GED, went back to school, received my amateur radio license, mentored other addicts. had speeches at colleges, schools, businesses,
and I'm now working to become an addiction counselor.

My Drug addiction made me a stronger man, and it still is, so if you think that
you're putting me down by calling me a drug addict, think again.. thanks for the compliment you bigot.

how about you go away? that's what you do best.
now go hit your crack pipe, toothless loser.

Find you a nice little cozy spot in hell and burn, I can handle name calling, but when you start spreading rumours and unfounded lies thats a completely different issue, very close to being legal issues. as I said, I've paid my pennance, my record is clean just as my system is, and has been for years, and I've worked hard to make it that way, and I will continue working hard to keep it that way, if you want to continue with this slander, I've gotton pretty good
in navigating the court systems in my 2 years of drug court, I will find a way to make you stop. so no, there will be no twitlist, this will all be considered
evidence if you want to continue pushing it. I do not care about being called "Names" and really could care less if someone calls me a drug addict, because that is what I am and it will always be a part of my life. through hard work I've been clean for over 5 years and I will continue to be. But the second you decided to call me a theif is when you crossed the line. even in my active addiction I have NEVER stole from anyone, and never begged from anyone, theives
are the bottom of the barrel in my book, even worse than you. if you are refrecencing the time someone offered to send me hardware to replace my hdd that fried when my computer was struck by lightening, I really appreciate the offer, but never received anything. And If I have surplus to offer, I would do the same myself just as I do now in the RC, and Ham Radio hobbies I'm so enthused to be a part of.

You, and your actions are a blight on the BBS world. You cause more harm than good, If I were a new user to BBSes and seen posts like you have posted, I would just go on and never look back, But since I'm quite the seasoned veteran I realize that there are many good people in this hobby that cancel you out. Obvouisly you have nothing better in life to do than to latch on to people and suck the goodness out of anything. You want to go and call me a crackhead, etc.
but act worse than ANY of the worse drug addicts i've ever met, clean or dirty.
obviously you are on some sort of drug, or just very, very mentally instable. I
do not want to compare you with any drug addict, because that would be an insult to them, most are very smart, and honest people, who have issues, and most of them need a nudge in the right direction to correct those issues. I'm thankful for the day (April 1st, 2009) that I got busted and was "Nuged" in the
right direction, I will never take nothing for that experience. If you were mentally mature enough to understand this you would not speak as you do, but your actions show that you are not, That is no conjecture there. So continue with your slanderous actions and see what happens.

For anyone else who has seen these messages and may of seen something offensive, I do aplologize, However I will not let someone attack me on a personal level and spread slanderous accusations for something I have fought so
hard to make right with society. This will be my last message addressed to this
person, but I will not let him keep up with these slanderous activities. And maybe you can see this as a good thing, Drug addiction affects many, many, people and is a silent killer. If you have issue, or no someone who does, get help or offer them help, there is a lot of help to be had out there. Also for those who get help and clear your name, there is also plenty of legal help for you against potential employers and individuals who discriminate against you or
slander your reputation you have worked so hard to get back.

You, and your actions are a blight on the BBS world. You cause more harm than good, If I were a new user to BBSes and seen posts like you have

i do all this because it's my hobby and i enjoy the people i meet and i like learning new things.

Addiction is a disease, it can happen to anyone, hurt your back, go to the doctor, they fill you full of opiates and if you have an addictive personality thats all it takes, but you have the option to be a fool or not, and you choose
    to be an idiotic fool.

if you want to sue me for repeating what was told to me, go ahead, and good luck. please do it as soon as possible.

No, You are presenting conjecture as fact and using it against me to soil my reputation that I have worked so hard to get back. That is Slander, that is ILLEGAL.

I sell RC and Amateur Radio products locally and globally, and if, god forbid some of my clients see these posts where you are stating that I am a theif that
would damage my business and reputation. I can be handled being called a drug addict all day because that is what I am. But I am CLEAN, and have been for 5 years. You are creating lies to make me look bad and you WILL STOP.

I have worked very hard to disspell the images of my past, even though I had issues with opiate pain medication, I NEVER stole to make ends meet. I hate a theif, and I hate a liar. YOU are a liar, and more than likely a theif, you steal peoples code and call it your own, then slather text all over your websites that you don't. You are bad for the BBS scene, I guarantee that you have run many GOOD potential users off with your ignorance.

Rob S. (Digital Man) should block you and all your ip addresses from even accessing synchro.net, you never bring anything productive to DoveNet or to Synchronet either. Your risk outweighs your benefit.

you told this guy a sob story that was BS and you took from him. you never followed through with what you told him. then during this you got busted
for drugs. you probably took what he gave you and sold it for drug money.

You keep saying "This Guy" I WANT NAMES, I want specifics, you cannot provide that however because you are full of shit.

And your messages are so full of "probablies" and "this guy" and some much congeture. BACK UP WHAT YOU SAY IDIOT!

I have made deals with NO ONE in the BBS world for ANY KIND of hardware, I do recall someone offering to send me a HDD, I turned his offer down and thats as far as it went..

GET ME BLACK AND WHITE PROOF, Names, Messages, Message headers.. You cannot provide this because it does not exist.!

I'll be in contact with your local jurisdiction soon, it's hard to find time to
fool with idiots like you with my busy schedule.. in the mean time send some messages to the moonites.

you, just like timewarrior are a loser in life who's best time of his life was when he was a teenager bbsing. you havent grown up since you were a teenager and you has lived off of relatives your entire life. now you
claim to be clean for 5 years and think you are absolved of all your actions.

Where are you getting your information? I don;t live with my relatives, I live alone, I HAVE been clean 5 years and I have REPAID my debt to society, and still work with drug addicts, and do speeches at highschools and colleges, I never said I was absolved from anything, thats between me and god. however I have done more for society than you could ever think of doing, even in my active addiction.

    there is no such thing.

You're just a plain idiot. Why do I waste my time with you. Obviously you have plenty of time to waste with me doing background checks on me because that is the only way you could get information that you have been spewing out then putting your own spin on it, and the information you are getting YOU HAVE TO PAY MONEY FOR. obviously you are a real loser. get back down in grammas basement.

why would i lie? all i'm saying is what this guy told me. i talked to
    him
at length and he seemed like a decent honest person. he had no reason
    to
    lie about anything.

Why would you Lie? Because you are a peice of shit.. you have not one
    shred
of empathy for anyone, and are a blight upon the face of the earth, you
    are
wasting oxygen that could be used for people who are actually worth
    being a
part of this species... "This Guy"?? Who is this guy? you give no
    specifics
because you're full of shit. Like I said before, I guy offered to send
    me a
hdd to replace the one that was damaged in a storm, I declined, nothing
    was
ever sent. Why am I even trying to explain anything to you. You're an
    Idiot.

been for years, and I've worked hard to make it that way, and I
    will
continue working hard to keep it that way, if you want to continue with this slander, I've gotton pretty good in navigating the
    court
systems in my 2 years of drug court, I will find a way to make
    you
stop. so no, there will be no twitlist, this will all be
    considered
evidence if you want to continue pushing it. I do not care about being called "Names" and really

i'm sure being the toothless loser that you are, your dick gets hard
    when
you think about suing someone and actually making some money for
    once,
    but it will be fruitless.

You don't know me, why do you call me a toothless loser? I have my
    teeth,
and why are you speaking such vulgar language on a GENERAL subboard that children read. We all know you are a manchild with the mentality of a 5
    year
old, but thats beyond the point. no one ones to read your vular remarks.

I love how you chewed him out, then put "best regards".. :D I know it's
your tagline, but I found it quite hilarious.

Also I have to admit you have talent at ragging out the lesser of intellectuals among us. ;)

I am happy to hear that you are sober and have chosen to keep yourself clean. However, telling this individual about using appropriate language and then dropping the s-bomb a few times makes me wonder if at some level, you brought yourself down to his level?

    Anyway, just my $0.02 worth!

If I had any part in name calling, I apologize. I admit I was more than frustrated with my friend cliff, who doesn't spout proof for his claims (because there isn't any), he just spouts things like "so you think you can trust the us gov't" (which was never a sound argument for whether the moon landing was a hoax or not)..

And in closing I do have Asperger's syndrome, which is not an excuse, but I hope it sheds some light onto why I sometimes come off cocky and a jerk. (Yes I really need to work on this..)

So in closing part 2, I do apologize if my comments went below that thresh hold of stupidity that is name calling.
