Great story! I remember people dropping off of the earth when MUDs came around; I'd introduced the internets to the software company I adminned, and people could telnet/archie/gopher/MUD to their hearts content. There'd be people at work in MUDs all day trying to multitask.

BTW: This isn't exactly the tangent you were going for, but if anybody's interested in any really good MUD, there's one called LostSouls that is by far the best I've ever seen... Partly because if you hit wizard levels, you can actually create playground rooms, code new creatues/weapons/quests, and have them incorporated into the game. I've got a link on my BBS; otherwise if you'd just like to check it out try telnet://lostsouls.org. I can't remember if there's a specific port to telnet to or not. If there is, you can find it by going to the external programs sub-menu on my BBS. :)
Anyway, if you check it out, don't discount it until you dig up some docs on how to get into some of the awesome guilds for good team playing or make friends with some high level characters. You've really got to have a bit of a guide through to see some of how awes it can get before you discount it.
Just my $.02, since I finally got my system back online after OpenBSD upgrade destroyed it... I'm sure there'll be a flood from me here soon, being as I'm still 50 messages back just in this room (and that's with at least one huge QWK update being lost onto my OpenBSD VM that I was testing without thinking to disable QWK networking first-- so if I get on there as well there may be more. heh.
