I stopped buying at Best Buy when I bought a couple of cameras and financed through them. Unbeknownst to me, the sales rep signed me up for
a "unemployment prevention" insurance clause - pay them $5 a month, and
if I lost my job and didn't want to pay for the camera any more, they'd take it back and close the note.

    Talk about a crappy deal.

Anyways, when I noticed it on the bill I'd been charged for a several months. Theydenied any wrongdoing at first, then faxed me a copy of the form, which showed someone didn't even bother trying to forge my
initials, to then wanting to haggle with me for how many months they
would refund back. Presented it like they were doing me a favor. Took several calls to get it straightened out, but at that point I was
willing to wait for as long as it took to get it taken care of.

Now I make a point of browsing there and buying elsewhere. And letting them know that.

When I was taking my business management courses, they used BB as an example
of the differences between internet retail stores (like Amazon), and brick-and-mortar stores (like Best Buy and Circuit City).

The long and short of it showed that most people who were in the market to buy a product, would use brick and mortar stores like Best Buy to physically touch and try out the item, in order to make their decision. Then they would go back to amazon or ebay to actually buy the item they wanted.

So, Best Buy is basically just a showroom for Amazon and eBay. Circuit City died from it, as they couldn't translate their showroom into sales.

Amazon is planning to open a brick-and-mortar store in San Francisco: www.geekwire.com/2014/amazon-slated-open-retail-store-next-week-san-francisco/ They obviously wouldn't be able to stock the vast inventory that is available on Amazon's web site, but it would at least be a place for them to stock some items and (hopefully) sell them at the same price a customer would get them for on their web site. Also, a physical location would be a place where customers could go to return an item without having to ship it back to Amazon themselves.

I'm wondering if having a physical store will turn out to be a good business decision for Amazon and if Amazon can succeed with that where others are failing.

i heard this a lot, and i think this is just something people came up with to explain why these stores were doing so poorly.

i think the reason they did poorly is because of lower value, high prices (including fake sales prices), rebates, old stock and a poor customer experience.

sure, i would go look at a couch, fridge or washing machine at a store and then go buy online, but that's not the whole enchilada.

the online alteratives were just better in most respects. also i depend on the users's reviews. i dont get so many crappy items anymore thanks to fellow complainers.

I think my greatest gripe was going online and shopping, checking pricing and inventory, and the getting there to find that they could not find the item (even though their computers showed in stock). It was usually a sales item,
but they always had a more expensive suggestion.....

Yeah, i was in a jam one time and needed a video card. i work 2 blocks away from bb, so i bought online and had it waiting at the pickup counter.

so i go in there, and wait and wait. various people have issues. i finally get to the front of the line and my item is not picked even though they said it was. so someone walks back and gets it. this took 3x longer than getting it myself and standing in line.

my boss used to give giftcars for BB (which i tossed) but now he just does prepay debit cards. THAT, i love. i bought a nice bottle of rumpleminze with that.

Yeah that happened to me many times. Also, I've bought online and went to store
to pick up, and low and behold, they sold the item to another customer.

They're behind the times. I hope they burn.
