How old is your mac? Describe it, I love old computers. For example I bought a used Apple ][gs a few weeks ago, just tried it out last night, happy to say it turns on! Gotta find a PC interface for it now. Need me some Oregon Trail!

    Cool!

I had a ][gs back in the mid to late 80s. About a year before Apple decided to
drop the Apple ][ line, completely. It was that day that I ditched all things Apple and never went back.

I did like all the Apple ][ systems that I had over the years back then. I owned several ][c systems in addition to the ][gs.

My BBS started - running on an Apple //c. Somewhere around late 1984 I think -
    but don't quote me.

Most people that ran BBS systems back then on Apple // systems, ran them on //e
systems. The //c was too new and not much worked with it - BBS wise.

I ran Apple-Net 2.x back then. It wasn't until around 4 years later that I went PC and over to WWIV.

I remember watching the modem lights and floppy disk access when people would call the BBS in the middle of the night.

Before going PC, I had (2) Apple //c systems and a //gs. They were not cheap systems back then, but most computers were not cheap.

I lived alone when I started the BBS, and used to keep the BBS in a walk
in closet with the modem turned down low so I could still hear it when the room was quiet. Remembered all of the overseas calls at night, and the clatter of two MFM hard drives when processing mail on a 286.

Mine started on an Apple //c with (2) floppies. You could watch the floppy drive light go on/off, along with the modem lights all night long.

When I went to WWIV and a 286 years later with the 40 meg MFM, that was HUGE space at the time. The system was busy just about 24/7. I got very used to falling asleep with the lights flashing since both systems were in my bedroom when I was growing up.

Even when I moved out, it originally stayed in the bedroom of my first apartment. It wasn't until later that it moved into a room setup for computers
in the basement of my first single family home.

These days, it lives on a VM on my ESXi cluster which is in the basement under the steps with the rest of my "network room" stuff.

Same thing here. I reemember those days like they were yesterday.

The BBS made less noise when people posted when I moved from my Apple //c (with
floppy drives) to a 286-16 PC with a 40 meg MFM hard drive. You could still hear the disk access, but it was much faster.

I could even tell when someone was downloading by just looking at the modem status lights!

Oh man, me too. After my bouts with my TI computer and TRS-80, I got a used IBM
8088 XT that served as my first PC. It had a 20MB MFM hard drive, and ran DOS like a champ. I had no problems running minix on it too. My dad ended up scoring a Mac SE/30 that I'd use too.

Then I later got a 386 computer at my mom's house, and I'd stay up so late using it, falling asleep to the lights flashing too (and the TV tuned to KTEH where old Doctor Who reruns would play in the wee hours of the night/morning). This is the same computer that would have The Dark Knight BBS for a few years running Telegard and later Renegade.

I still stay up late... usually because of work or insomnia (my wife hates it)... but I never fall asleep to the blinking lights anymore :)

With 2 kids in the house, I've become a night rat. BBSing to me was never a daytime thing, best done in a dark house.

Netflix doesn't help, I've gotten into the habit of serial binge-watching shows at night.

I'm in the same boat. Between running 2 companies (one is my consulting practice) and 2 kids, I really only get any good work done late at night after the kids are tucked away and the wife has fallen asleep. I need quiet.

But because I do so much work at night, it's hard to find enough time for BBSing. I want/need more time to do that :)

Yeah, me too. I'm also in the habit of falling asleep in the wee hours of the morning to NetFlix or YouTube.

Miss those days as well! Weapon of cboice back in those days was Radio Shack TRS-80 Color Computer ("COCO") that I ran my board on. Had one of those "Plug n' Power" devices connected to it that sends X10 signals through house wiring to turn on appliance receivers. Used it with a string of green Christmas lights above my work area. When callers paged me, it ran a subroutine that activated them. Perfect ambiant light to see the keyboard. Seems so silly now, but thought it was so cool at the time. lol

Only reasons I stay up late occationally these days is because of work, too. All the flashing lights and servers are in my basement in a spot under the stairs. The hard drives are the only lights flashing and I would rather not sleep in the basement under the steps, but the server white noise is relaxing. :)

On nights when my wife was away, I'd sleep in the downstairs BBS room/kids play room/home office. hearing the white noise reminds me of when I had the BBS in a studio back in the day. I, too, found the white noise pleasing.

These days I put on a frequency with POCSAG on an SDR and enjoy the sweet sounds of 1200 and 9600 baud data packets that are remarkably similar to modem handshakes.

Since you're in my area, tune a scanner, SDR, or ham radio w/ wide receive to 153.834 or so.

There is plenty of white noise in the data center at my work.

On the occational late night at work doing an upgrade of some sort, I try to stay out of there due to that fact. Makes we want to go to sleep.
