Cool. I'm glad to hear you're out there and still kickin'. :) Been awhile since I've seen anything from you. Damn good reason to be away from the system for awhile, also, if I might interject my own opinion heah.
I'm still working on getting on my feet in PDX right now, but I've finally gotten 'stable' enough so that I'm making myself push through at least one online course from Stanford in the meantime so that my brain isn't totally rotting. I mean, working on the JavaScript additions to Synchronet is helping, but I don't just want to refresh, I want to actually be pushing my knowledge a bit, too. I must admit, being on the downside of the 30s is making me worry a bit about the decline of gray matter. Not that I think it's inherent in humans, but humans eating a diet consisting of the chemical content that Americans eat? Yeah, maybe.
Anyway, I'm really glad to hear you're pushing things beyond where they were at, too. It's way too easy to get entrapped into settling with where you're at. If I may be so bold, it seems like people for certain aspects that you and I seem to share, it can be a most detrimental thing to just sit and tread water as such.

Good luck on your AS! Pick & choose your electives carefully; I could've made my AS a lot more useful if I would've spent a lot less electives on wiping up the grades leftover from my first failed attempt through college.
What's the BCIS part stand for, if I might inquire?

it's all doing well, pretty much. whats good is you can start out in something like physical therapist and network with people and go to school to be a nurse or nurse practitioner.

just dont be caught in a rut being a nurses aid or other type of assistance.
at your age you need stability, and these healthcare jobs are in demand.
i wouldnt go get some degree in web dev and then have it all for nothing.

Yeah, I can see where the electives matter a lot. I've got two choices in math... one is a basic fundamental college algebra, the other is something
way more advanced... I'd have to look it up, but I'm trying to figure out
what would be more useful to me. I don't want to struggle through something advanced if I really don't need it.

BCIS is Business Computer Information Systems...

Here, they offer two concentrations...one is on the business side:
applications courses mainly, good for if you want to be in business
management, I guess. The other is a web developer, lots more programming courses. I made sure it wasn't just HTML/CSS and php...there's some java
and C#, and possibly one or two others on electives. I'd have to look again.

Yeah, it didn't seem like a lot at first, but the exhaustion creeps up on
you. I had to take some time off work Saturday... thank goodness my boss seemed understanding.

Also try out Indian Institute of Technology's NPTEL program. I think their YouTube channel is nptelhrd. They have as playlists courses that consist of ~40 videos/lectures each.

Grab the one-edition-old version of the text book used for the course (or a text book on the same subject), do all the problems, and you've got a free education!

Yeah, my problem was that the CS major that I was taking had, at its core, compsci classes that were much more oriented to passing students, thus making the state college look better, rather than being useful in the industry. For instance, the most advanced _required_ programming course was in Visual Basic.
Now you and I and Mro all know that Visual Basic compiles down to the same NANO bytecode as Visual C#. I'm guessing that most everybody who is in the slightest bit familiar with programming or coding as a profession _also_ knows, however, that _any_ language with 'basic' in its title will get you scoffed out of the industry, if you are to put it as your crowning achievement on your resume'.
I ended up doing some projects to learn C# later on, but the jobs I applied at basically refused me (with a cynical laugh) any serious consideration after they looked at my curriculum and saw that on there, prior to that point. Since then I've been trying to find a secure base of operations to work from, and really haven't been able to apply for any new positions in the field. I'm only getting past that point now, actually.
But yeah, I would've totally been able to make up for that if some of my electives would've been in different programming languages. Unfortunately, between my necessary classes to have a dual major between compsci & mathematics, and taking the same classes that I'd taken during my previous (and failed) university stint, I didn't have room to do that. I had to get rid of those Fs from the semester(s) that I dropped out previously, and it tied my hands. I didn't worry about it much, because I was going for a 4 year degree, but when the IRS computers went down at exactly the right point to fuck me out of my fafsa on a semester after it was too late to withdraw without penalty... Well the pathetic curriculum of the AS became all that I had to draw from. Plan strategic, is the moral of this story. I took for granted that my last 2 years would make up for the first two. That wasn't the best idea. I'd say try to plan for any contingency.

Heh. I'll check that out after my current stint is done. Right now I'm actually busy enough, between trying to stay alive, playing 'red tape double-dutch', taking the one class, and doing the single parent thing, that I've totally got my hands full. Hell, I can barely keep up. I'll check it out after that, though.
I actually think it's going to be a bit before I need anything too special, anyway. I mean, cryptography is about the most specialized I'm going into anytime soon. Other than that, I'm still trying to cover basic fundamentals in CompSci and physics. The mathematics that I want to be learning are at a bit of a higher level, but I don't really have the time to be doing that along with the other stuff. Not to mention it doesn't have nearly as big of a potential to pay off anytime soon, which, unfortunately, has to be my focus right now. :(

Also, until recently there was never any jobs here for developers. Now, I'm seeing more want ads pop up, plus a spattering of remote jobs becoming available.

I think linearly, like as in qbasic.

The first thing I type is the first thing that happens, rinse and repeat.

This you can write the 3rd thing first, and then the 43rd thing second
thinking just melts my brain... I wish I could unlearn basic type languages, then maybe I could learn python or ruby...

I haven't messed around too much with C++ or Java, but I've read enough code and a few books, such that I think I might not have too many problems learning them. I think having taken Pascal in high school might help, as well.

In my early years I did a lot of simple BASIC programs, and suddenly being thrust into an object oriented language really broadened the scope of what could be accomplished in a language. I always thought being able to define
an object and give it multiple properties really simplified the coding
process. In 8th grade, I remember how complicated my end of year QBASIC program became... we got to write whatever we wanted so long as it
demonstrated certain coding skills, and I way over did it. I actually had
to cut significant parts out in the end that I never finished, and wound up with a barely passing score.

With Pascal, coding was so simple to me, I was finishing each assignment in class, dressing it up with menus and color, and I still had time to help
other students who were struggling.

Just keep in mind that if you have code that's going to be used more than once should definitely be seperated into its own object (class, function,
whatever). I know I'm likely oversimplifying this, but that's what little I can remember from school and what I practice when I find time to practice a little.

Just think of it as modular, and interupt-triggered, where the piece of code will run if an event comes for it to run. It's still sequential inside the modular block of code.

Then you just build up these blocks that communicate.
