• Synchronet Questions

From Phuck Ewe@VERT/GOONS to All on Saturday, August 30, 2014 01:01:26
I know this is probably not the place to ask these questions, but I saw the other QWK subnets are empty, so I'm going to take my luck in this one...

I have been trying to modify, some aspects of the BBS I am running off and I have hit a couple of snags. I am hoping you guys can take a quick look and let me know how I can fix.

The board is located at bbs.everythingisgoon.com

    1. on the login screen, even though I have a set of fields for username and password, when you type your name, it does so about 2 or 3 blocks up from the line where the space is provided. Does anyone here knows how to fix that?

    2. After you log in, I would like to modify the screens that show up in between the main login and the main menu. Where can I find those files? I have looked in the wiki, and while the wiki is somewhat useful its a mess of information.

    3. DOSEMU, how do I verify I have it installed properly.

    4. How much memroy would it take the bbs to work with 32Nodes and above?

PS. I am running Synchronet Linux on Ubuntu 14.04

    Thanks!

most of these questions can be answered in the synchronet docs.
check out the customization section too.

synchronet documentation is one of the best out of all bbs softwares and it SHOULD be read by new sysops. even if you are doing a text search for a problem.

it really is useful and telling someone to read the docs isn't the usual nag. ---

The first thing I did was check up the customization section of the wiki and if you call that enlightening then you must have a rock for a brain. It is not in any sense intuitive specially to someone who is new with this system. There should be more derivative examples of how to do certain things. Given the amount of people that are in the "know" for this bbs its pretty strange there are no more entries on the wiki by more people with more examples on how to do things. If anything a short tutorial should be done to explain how most of those things are done.

synchronet documentation is one of the best out of all bbs softwares and

I will probably end up writing some sort of guide of my blog at http://decayingsyndrome.com, since the documentation here is very 1996. You should see the wiki of the game I play with my guild, that thing is a bible, and everybody participates.

It's very easy to point a finger and call someone a clown, because they dont understand the instructions written on a wiki, that apparently to you, they are a god-send, but to us beings with more grey matter, they are pretty lacking.

I dont know about you, but I come from the world where you give real world examples, and teach people who dont know diddly squat how the wheel turns, it might be a bother to you, but if we dont share knowledge the world will never move forward.

Please since you seem to have wisdom devine, show me where in the wiki it tells you how to control the fields of the login screen so the prompt doesnt pop in the middle of the art, and shows in the field I provided.

    Salam Salam, bringer of wisdom.

hi, i pointed out a few of the parts in your post where you were
a huge asshole, and you deserve no help. also the documentation provides examples for almost every single feature.

there is actually an example in the
part you referenced and it as marked as an example!

If that isn't the mahfahkin' pot calling the kettle black, I don't know what really is. I've been over this already this morning, though, which is actually why I'm writing this message.

Yeah, see, this 'stuff' has a human element, which is why _you_, in particular, are not cut out for it. You need to go dip your wick back into some circuitry; preferably some that doesn't have a chance in hell of ever running any sort of AI or neural networking code. You shouldn't be interacting with anything even close to self-aware, or even able to parse complex behavior details about its outside environment, _EVER_.
So I just picked up a job, now that my son is finally in school, and I can join the wage slavery leagues again. This will probably be a great relief to everyone; I know some people have probably tired of me acting as 'Protector of the Realm from Mro' incessantly while he has had me twitlisted.
Today is the day that I twitlist Mro. I'm done with that shithead. I hope somebody else pipes up, and makes sure that there's a message at least for every long ejaculation of his messages, proving to some of the newbies that this is _not_ the kind of behavior that BBSing is all about. Regardless, I have a real life going on again now, and I've got a son to take care of. Plus I'm not on my happy meds any more, so I'm gonna try to cut drama to a minimum. :) I'm stablizing in a town that has what I've been looking for my whole life, at least as close as the USA's materialistic culture can get to it. I'm not wasting any more time on that crapola.
If there is to be a new Protector of the Realm from Mro, I will officially hand down my self-appointed position, if you would like a grand theatric entrance. (nod) It is a position of much honor, responsibility, and little thanks or gratitude. Only those of the highest moral caliber should apply. ;)

Can we ask where you moved? Are you still in North Dakota?

Oregon. ;) Beautiful place, and the first place in the USA that I've been, after having on both coasts (the Canadian & Mexican borders, too, and many spots in between) where 9 out of 10 people on the street happily make eye contact with you. The smiles that they give seem warm and genuine. Crinkles around the eyes and everything.
Don't get me wrong, I know that it's not real every time, but the people here try to be more tolerant. It's a better place for my mixed-race son,
and it's the only place I've seen after being a nomad for 20 years in this country that holds any hope of providing the open-mindedness that I've looked for since I first got my ass beat for having long hair and not going along blindly with anti-native racism in North Dakota.
I thought I was going to have to move out of the country, to someplace poorer and less materialistic. Looks like I'll be in the USA a little bit longer, though. ;)
I'm not going back to North Dakota. Not if I can help it. I've got a couple of friends there that are good, and one member of family that I trust, but out of the sheer number of people that I've known there, that's a pretty sad ratio.
    :)

Oh yeah, Oregon is nice. Especially southern Oregon, the great State of Jefferson! As a kid, I liked the name of the Rouge River, because it made me think of the text dungeon game Rouge.

I agree, it's a beautiful place. I like the greenery in the northwest, but I also lived in Bend (central Oregon) for about a year, and I think it's nice there too. Plenty of friendly people there too.
