• Improved Oregon Trail version 0.2.1b for Synchronet

From LaRRy LaGoMoRpH@VERT/GRUDGEDU to All on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 12:15:48
Hi everyone, a couple months back I posted a version of Oregon Trail I was working on just as a test version, and some people installed it on their
boards and were happy as far as I could tell. To those people who already downloaded it, this a new and improved version that I like a whole lot more.

    https://github.com/chairmanmow/synchro_trail

bug fixes : the game exits gracefully and doesn't throw any errors on exit (that was a stopgap solution)

features : BBS to BBS play, list of players to complete trail, 'tombstones', cause of death added to game over method and DB functions to record player deaths and a "high scores list" those who complete trail. When you enter the game you will see a list of all the people who have beat the trail and what
BBS (it's not easy), followed by a list of those who have died and how far
they made it before they died and it tells you what they died of and what they wrote on their tombstone. When you die, you will be shown your tombstone and then a flashing red GAME OVER. If you somehow make it to Oregon City (I've
only done it once), you'll get your name on the list of people who have made it, which will be ranked by the date people made it. I have a score server on my BBS and there is a server.ini file in the github dir.

I've pushed the version from 0.1 to 0.2.1b, if you read the github page thoroughly you might have an idea of why I keep the versions low and why I decided to add a beta label. But if you're too lazy to read that whole thing
: I can think of more enhancements to the game and I think there are a couple places in the game where the logic might be slightly askew (aka bugs). Fortunately, they are pretty minor, if anything benefit the player, but not to a great extent. The unfortunate part about it though is that it is a bit of grunt work for me that I'm not in a hurry to tackle. But if you want to build upon it or anything take a stab, or if you want to work on it some you can let me know.

There's grunt work that can be done if you don't code also. ANSI screens
could replace the events for instance. The content matter could be changed,
or made modular (so you could have a themed out version of the Trail for your BBS). You don't need a degree in rocket science if these are improvements you'd like to see, otherwise, don't keep your fingers crossed. But I'm
willing to provide guidance and moral support especially if it helps improve your own human capital.

No problem, It was a good learning experience for me. The last version was just to see if anyone noticed any bugs, no one noticed, but there may have been one or two. Anyhow they're gone now, even the ones I was talking about when I said it was beta (although though it's possible there are others).

The cool thing about this new version is if you make it to the end of the trail, you will get your name on the list in the order you made it. So if you were to make it to the end of the trail now, you would be the first on the list forever, since no one has made it yet. Try to be the first!

I almost made it to the end, you can see I made it 2004 miles recently, 36 miles short of Oregon City before running out of bullets against some riders. It was mildy exciting.

I could give some tips, but it seems like people are doing ok, but I challenge you to complete the trail. I don't want to be the first one without giving other people a chance to familiarize themselves with it. I'll give it another go soon though!

the instructions are on the github site, you just need the two files, server.ini and oregontrail.js ...put them in an folder somewhere in xtrn and set your program up in SCFG the command line would be :

    ?oregontrail.js

can support multiple users : Yes

let me know if u have any issues. the instructions should be clearer on github.

Aha, good deal. I tried to make things as close to the original in that version, but here's a little strategy guide I'm coming up with.

For my initial purchases, I usually spend the max on oxen 299, with about 21 bucks spent on food, 50 bucks on ammo, and like maybe 30 bucks on supplies... sometimes I don't worry about clothes.

Obviously, that's not a lot of food, so I start hunting right away, if I miss then the game is over otherwise, you keep going, don't spend a lot of money on food.

You want to keep an eye or your supplies and ammo as well, if you get caught with bandits and no bullets or stuck in a blizzard with no supplies you die. The reason you don't want to spend too much money on supplies though is because they often get damaged throughout the trip, but you should have enough on hand to not die (usually 20 is more than enough). Clothes can keep you from having to use supplies as they can keep you from getting sick and they never get damaged, but you can still get sick with any amount of clothes on because the amount of clothes neeeded is a random number.

When you hit 950 miles, you'll be in the mountains, and you won't know if you've made it out until you hit around 1750 miles and there's always a chance of a blizzard in the mountains. I often die when I hit the mountains unaware and don't have any supplies.

    Good luck!

so why does he need to connect to your server for a game like that?

There's a db hosted on my machine that has all the "high scores" and "tombstones". When you play the game it will tell you all the people who beat the game and in what order and what BBS they were from and on what date. There's also another little DB that gets written to when you die that basically says what you died of, how far you traveled and from what BBS, and what you wrote on your tombstone.

Anyhow, when you boot the game, it'll show all the people who have beat the trail (no one yet) and then the most recent people to die and what their tombstones say. I think it makes the game more fun to play because now you're competing against other people. But it's easy enough to run locally though as well with your own db, it's the same as most of the other js games in cvs that use the json-svc.

Yeah, I know it would look better with some graphics, and I'm not entirely incapable of doing, but don't have the time right now. It's easy enough to do, it's just a matter of drawing the pictures, which I would imagine I'd need at least 25 or so for all the events and intros and what not. I think as far as the next version goes it will probably have that ability, but also it will probably be modular in the sense that it will a separate file where you can customize the strings and the ansi's so that the game can have different themes between boards. I'm not actively working on this right now, but maybe someone else is, if anyone has anything they want to contribute to the project from a load screen to events to actual coding, it's appreciated and I can be of assistance and help coordinate, it's not that complicated to do, I'm just avoiding the busy work for now.

    cheers

yeah, that might be cool to set something up, shoot me an email or something.
i can probably give you some tips for synchronet, although i tried to log on
to your board and it looks like you're already doing some stuff so keep on doing on. don't let mro discourage you or get under your skin, i didn't pop
up on that thread to back mro up, i really didn't even read what he wrote and knew it had taken a turn for the worse so i thought i'd offer my 2 cents, a lot of people ignore him, although he manages to pop up pretty much
everywhere. i was pretty lazy at that point though and didn't actually copy the actual settings i just gave you the gist of it. anyhow, i offer nothing but goodwill. mro does not like it when English is not used, so I wasn't really speaking to him, except to get under his skin just a little bit in the woefully optimistic hopes that he will one day lighten and praise jah!

    anyhow, word up!

as far as documentation goes, knocking it doesn't get you very far, i'll tell you.

I'd like to give this a try also. Is there a special way to install it?

Sorry for the delay in responding, I was out of town.
The GitHub URL where you can find all the files: https://github.com/chairmanmow/synchro_trail

And installation instructions are very specific and easy to use, they can be found here: https://github.com/chairmanmow/synchro_trail/blob/master/Install.txt
