I am thinking of setting up a nostalgic BBS for my mother...my biggest
question so far is where can this stuff be obtained in this modern day when half of it and the makers are gone?

For example, she wants the original Wildcat! server, which to my research was replaced with WINS. Would I be able to pull off a full Wildcat! emulation with Synchronet, or would she be able to tell the difference?

And then of course doors. Where to get doors nowadays? Does everyone rely on cracks and keygens since most doors cannot be purchased? And can those even be found? Google is not very helpful in this.

Synchronet has a Wildcat shell, but she might still be able to tell a difference. I'm sure more customization could be done via scripting & text files to make it look more like Wildcat in places that the shell doesn't cover.

And then of course doors. Where to get doors nowadays? Does everyone

Yes, in some cases we have to rely on cracks & key generators for software that has been long abandoned. There is still some BBS software and doors that can be registered though.

Google searching led me to some web sites several years ago:

BBS Archives (they have lots of old BBS software and doors, including older software that is now abandonware):
    http://archives.thebbs.org/

    BBSFiles (with registerable BBS doors):
    http://www.bbsfiles.com/main.html

    Sunrise Doors:
    http://www.sunrisedoors.com/index.php

    Jibben Software:
    http://jibbensoftware.com/

Gameport (they have LORD, etc., but from what I've heard, lately they have not been responsive to registration payments):
    http://www.gameport.com/bbs/

    TradeWars:
    http://www.classictw.com/

Tournament Trivia (used to be shareware but has recently been open-sourced with the keygen made available):
    https://github.com/eelias/tournament-trivia

    Buffalo Creek (Spitfire BBS software):
    http://www.buffalocrk.com/

Sadly, some of the other BBS door sites I have bookmarked seem to have disappeared.

I can't speak of WildCat since I've never used it (other than calling some WC boards back inteh day) but regarding games ... I know Tradewars and Lunatix are still accepting registrations because I've recently registered them. John Dailey is also taking registrations for Baron Realms, Falcon's Eye, Global War, etc... other games and Doors I'm running cracked only if I couldn't find a legit way to run them. I have a couple links in the Games and Doors sticky topic at bbs-forum.com where I've found some things.

nolageek, good link there, had I known about it months ago it would have saved me some digging. Also, I simply have to know where you picked up a Door
version of Oregon Trail? I'd love to get that running.

Thanks! I actually got the Oregon Trail from one of the DOVENet subs. LaRRy LaGoMOrph posted it a couple of weeks ago. I downloaded it from here:

Looks like I got it running. I used the instructions for synchronetris to get the SCFG looking right, and its running like a charm. Thanks!

Then I owe you some thanks! You did a great job with it! When I saw it, and then couldn't find any trace of it across the internets, I thought maybe nolageek had the original Commodore 64 code running in a virtual machine like CCS64. I had my fingers crossed when I asked him how he got it running that it wasn't an emulator, lol.

    Thanks again man!

I wrote this game so I should be able to help you set it up, what problems are you experiencing? I can also be found on synchronet irc or you can shoot me an email to grudgemirror_at_gmail_dot_com (hopefully you can decode that).

i replied earlier, but i saw that you got it set up. it's quite possible that any errors were caused by me moving my bbs from one machine to another and changing OS's and what not. hopefully most of the growing pains should be over in a bit.

    cheers

    Larry,

I was afraid it was going to be complicated, but it wasnt. It was very easy to set up. Correct me if I'm wrong but the JSON is not needed if im connecting to you for the interbbs play right?

    Thanks!
