• 90s flashback?

From Vistascan@VERT/SILICONU to All on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 13:27:56
So since a lot of people here are older than me, I was wondering if you could recommend some (hopefully free) videos or documentaries on computers or the internet in the 90s. I really miss the old computer screens and limited functionality of the systems back then and was wondering they were captured
on film. Any TV show dealing with computers from the 90s will also do.

    Thanks.

    Hey there Vistascan!

You might want to check this out: http://www.bbsdocumentary.com/
And you might get a kick out of these links: http://www.vintagecomputing.com/ https://archive.org/details/historicalsoftware

Also, there was a great series I remember called "Download: The True Story of the Internet" --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Download_The_True_Story_of_the_Internet

Try Computer Chronicles at archive.org. Also, Triumph of the Nerds is a pretty good three part documentary. It might be available somewhere (I have it on VHS). If you like Computer Chronicles, Net Cafe is also on archive.org.

The BBC put out a good docu-drama called "Micro Men" about Sinclair vs. Acorn. I think I watched it on Youtube...hopefully it's still there.

Finally, those computers weren't really limited in capabilites, especially by the 90s. It's just that people collectively quickly forget how much we could do or how advanced we already were so long ago.

Check out Youtube and look for TTVRewind. You'll find several episodes of CNET Central there (1997 was the year of these particular episodes). I used to LOVE that show when it was on. I miss the old stuff too :)

    Thanks!

A show that I really like that has some vintage systems is 'Computer Chronicles' and is available on YouTube. Their show ran from the early-mid 80's until 2002 or so. Really interesting stuff!

    Good Luck!

Your post reminded me of ZDTV and TechTV before they became G4 (shudder). Did you ever watch "Call For Help" or "The Screensavers" on ZDTV? My grandparents had a C-band satellite, so I was able to watch it that way, but I would also stream it in the late 90s over the Internet at a public computer (we still had dial-up)

At home, that is. We still had dial-up at home. Hence the need to do it at a public computer with a broadband connection.

Look up Computer Chronicles on YouTube. Computer Chronicles was a TV series that ran from 1983(?) to 2002 and talked about various computer subjects. I only just heard of this show recently, and I saw that there was an episode about how to choose a new computer to buy (from 1993), an episode about software piracy, an episode about shareware, computer games, etc..
