• Hi all, former sysop trying to get back into things after 20-ish years

From Christian Langeland@VERT/UKRYPT to All on Saturday, May 24, 2014 00:01:01
    Hi all!

After about 20 years of not having a BBS (or calling one), I figured it was about time to get one back online.

Back in the "good days", I used to run an Amiga BBS (Yes, you know those?) on one dialup line. Being from Norway, we didn't have free local calls, so people used offliners and scripts to spend as little time online as possible. Good for discussion, not so good for door-games :)

Anyway, I've been having a retro-kick lately, bought myself a Commodore 64, floppy drives, the whole shebang. And, I have to admit.. The Last Ninja is still as hard as I remembered it to be :)

I've never used Synchronet bbs-software before this, but it seems rather intuitive, even if I struggle to find a function to "mark all posts in this gorup as read", or even just "only list subjects of posts", but I'm sure it's just a matter of reading a bit more. After all, I did manage to get Dove-NET working quite nicely (and without asking anyone for help..)

Anyway, I'm looking forward to slowly becoming a part of the community, and hopefully also adding fidonet when I feel confident that the bbs will stay online.

    Have a good one!

Speaking of BBS and sysops being alive, Crystal Aerie will be off line for about a week because I don't trust the old rattling computer while I'm away in the hospital. I think this is the first extended outage since about 1988.

I just wanted to add, C64 was my first favorite computer. The good ol 1541 drives! I remember these drives getting real old and the header on them had problems after insertion so many times that I used different things on it to temporarily fix it. Those were the days as a kid when I loved to fix things!

I always enjoyed taking things apart and fixing them when I was a kid too. These days, it's harder to figure out how something works by taking it apart, because all you're likely to see is solid-state parts - So it can still be somewhat of a mystery how something works. However, computers have become more reliable over the years due to fewer moving parts. I haven't had to clean a mouse ball in about 10 years, and now I don't have to worry about floppy drives failing because I now use USB flash drives. Also, my boot drive now is a solid-state drive, which doesn't have a motor to wear out and won't get damaged if I drop it (although solid-state drives will still eventually fail because they can only be written to a limited number of times). I still use a traditional hard drive as a secondary drive for storage though, since solid-state drives are still fairly expensive.

I think the total elimination of moving parts would greatly help improve the reliability of PCs and electronics in general. PCs still use fans for cooling, and fans still use moving parts that will eventually fail. I'm not sure what technology could eliminate moving parts from a fan though.
I remember when CPUs for PCs didn't get hot enough to need a fan or even a heat sink - and back then, pretty much the only fan in most PCs was the one in the power supply. My first PC had a 286 processor, which looked a lot like many other chips and didn't require a fan or heat sink. Even most of the 386 processors didn't require a cooler, although they got warm. I'm sure the processors used in other computers back then such as the Commodore 64, Apple II, etc. probably didn't need coolers either. At one point, when I had upgraded to a 486-based PC, I remember going through a few CPU coolers with fans that would start buzzing/vibrating after a while, and I really got annoyed when that happened.

Well, the demoscene is still active here (I should know, I'm actually a part of it ;), but I wouldn't say that Amiga's are a big part of it anymore.
We do get a few good demos every now and then, and people are getting into "retro"-stuff nowadays, so it's not completely forgotten atleast.

Regarding the demoscene-thing, I'm a co-organizer of Solskogen (http://www.solskogen.no) and Kindergarden (http://kindergarden.untergrund.net/2014/), both parties in Norway. I used to be a crewmember at The Gathering (http://www.gathering.org), but that became too much fuzz about anything BUT the demoscene, so I left that.

    So, yeah.. "hi" :)
