Porn,Warez,Hack/Phreak. With the right access you could find anything. Sysops had/have full control of what you can access and how long you have to access. Not like the web which is one big free for all. I remember BBS's advertising "5 CD's of porn files online" but that wasn't my thing. Now a
days porn is everywhere. I think BBS's were able to monitor access much
better than today. That's just my 2 cents anywayz.

There was porn, it was mostly in GIF format back then, although i think there may have been some jpgs. Since I was around 13-15 during my peak BBS years,
I definitely downloaded some and stored it on floppy disks. I think you could have about 7 gifs on a 1.44 MB floppy, and it took about 7-15 minutes to download a gif at 14.4Kbps speed if I recall.

Keep in mind that if you were downloading, you couldn't really do anything else as far as online communication. Also, you couldn't preview porn before you downloaded it. I think my collection wound up being like 14 disks or so, which seems low to me now, but when I think of the fact that I would have to dedicate so much time to getting a GIF and tie up my phone line and someone else's it makes sense.

There were some boards that made you verify your age as well, I forget how it was accomplished but you kind of were the master of your domain so whatever rules you wanted to apply as a sysop went. My options for getting porn were limited by these sorts of restrictions. I think I mostly went to one board in particular, and I would have my allotted time for the day, and I would try to grab what I could within that time frame.

Yep. That stuff was out there..

And on the warez note, when I ran my original BBS back in the 90s, I got a few callers who would email me and say "I heard this was a warez BBS". I was always confused why they thought I might have warez because I never carried warez had never advertised warez in my BBS ads. I thought maybe they were confusing my BBS with another, but then I realized they may have been law enforcement officials trying to do a bust. I'm not sure if they actually did that though..

Oh yeah. I remember building up credits to download a 10MB file that would take ALL FREAKING NIGHT to finish, then perhaps... just maybe... I'd make out some naughty bits. Maybe but probably not. We have it so easy now. :)

I was very paranoid about this sort of thing. I would voice validate anyone that seemed remotely supicious and during the brief time I had adult materials I required a photocopy of an ID be snailmailed to me. That only lasted a few months then I removed my whole transfer section except for a few utilities. I always had message oriented boards anyway.

That's how I kept the bills paid. :)

Tho it was far more difficult then. When full color images even at low resolution took several minutes to download there were a few tricks to keep folks happy and prevent them from getting all bent over snagging something they didn't want.

We used to make thumbnail images of a folder of pics. Then you'd download that one file, look thru it to figure out which ones you wanted in full size, then queue up the full size files.

Also, each picture generally had a text description on them as well. So it was our job to look thru each image and describe them. :)

Oh yeah. That was one of the draws (from what I've heard...).
People would log into boards to download the naked pix. And not just cheap ones, we're talking high class JPEGS.
I kind of miss never downloading those .... ;-)

some of the biggest commercial bbses dealt with porn. that's how they got their subscriptions.

Porn was everywhere, on most boards. The ones that didn't advertise that they had it, usually had private porn sections that you could request access to. There was a lot of boards to access it, that's for sure. I think that probably helped fuel the growth of BBSes at one point.
