I'd love to be able to give my son something better than what he gets at the public schools these days...

The Ron Paul Curriculum! Also look into Early Algebra (or something like that.) It gets kids thinking of math in terms of algebraic constructs much earlier than the 7th-9th grades that most of us are first exposed.

Thank you very muchly for the info on your experience with home
skuling. I may well be needing this in the near future, here. My
    state is North Dakota, for reference, btw. I can't believe frigging schools don't even teach people cursive writing any more. jaskldf;j;
Er, at least in this state.

I don't know about whether Texas is or isn't teach cursive. I don't
recall if I went over it, but you'll need to check the laws in your
state. Some states require a lot of hoops to be jumped through in
order for a parent to teach their own child.

I was reading in a homeschooling newsletter that there's a family
who's trying to claim asylum in the US due to Germany's laws *against* homeschooling. Over there children have been stripped from families
over it. The reasons given for the mandatory state education are, to
me, creepy and shocking considering Germany's past and their current
aversion to anything bringing back those memories.

I think most curriculums have that, although they're not always called "algebra". My son just finished a section in his 1st grade math
called "algebra", and it was simply showing how to find a missing
addend in an addition problem, or how to find the missing number in subtraction, etc. I remember doing stuff like that in early
    elementary thirty years ago.

I picked up a math workbook I'm planning on buying for 2nd grade and
looked through it, and it had "algebra concepts" as well.

Texas schools teach cursive in 3rd grade then give up. (sorry for the necro, new to BBSing)
