• Identifying Series

From Angus McLeod@VERT/ANJO to All on Monday, April 21, 2008 19:32:00
I'm trying to identify a series of books I read about 20 years ago. I
can't remember any important details, like the author, the name of the
series, or the name of any particular book.

The series is set in post-apocalyptic America, about 1,000 years after
human civilization has been decimated by a series of asteroid strikes. Civilization has begun to climb upwards again, most notably in the form of
a matriarchal society which lives in a series of walled cities. (Men mind
the kids and are home-makers.) Outside the cities, different clans, gangs
or bands -- mostly *not* matriarchal in nature -- live nomadic lives.
Most knowledge of pre-history (our present day) has been lost.

If I remember, there were six or seven books in the series. Each dealt
with a different issue, set in the milieu described above. Sometimes the focus is in the cities, sometimes it lies with one of the nomadic groups. While I can not recall the name of the author, it strikes me that the
author was not all that obscure.

Some of the themes in the various books:

    * One of the cities falls (literally) because the administration abuses
    the rights of a prisoner.

    * A faction discovered a nuclear submarine and attempts to get a warhead
    to work.

    * A community of survivors in a volcanically warmed area, is isolated from
the rest of the world due to being surrounded by polar ice.

    * A newly discovered, previously buried dome turns out to be a nuclear
shelter, containing some present day technology and scientists.

Soes any of this sound familiar to anyone? I'm trying to discover the
name of the author, and so to identify the series of books.

    Got it. :-)

    Thanks anyway...

You are always welcome, just like Ray Eason.
