I built a music player for my Man Cave inside an old radio box.

Photo album and description here, if you care: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Nthmeg3cQVVrDbqBA

I used an Arduino to handle the buttons and knobs, a Raspberry Pi as the actual player and replaced the dial with an eInk display.

Nice build. ilike how you left the tubes in, even though most will probably not see them. Awhile I ago I didn't have a project at hand to implement it, but I was looking for small glass or plastic items that looked like tube
bodies for a possible retro project. In a local store there was a gumball machine full of plastic capsules with kids toy isn them, and I was thinking
one of those fosted domes with an amber led under it would look good.

A pair of slightly angled mirrors \/ behind the project could serve to "bring forward" the artwork from behind? Maybe even add some
strategically placed LEDs to add some hint of tube activity?

When I was a pre-schooler, I found it fascinating to watch the tubes in
the tv console light up. I remember asking to WAIT for me to get behind
the set before someone turned on the tv.

Ya, but it is a nice decoration. The intention was to have the radio on a desktop then you could look behind it, but I ran out of space to do that.

Ooo... That's actually a really neat idea. I didn't think of that (but then I don't have kids and never look at those gumball machines in the stores).

I remember as a child there was some pink or purple sweet tart type powdered candy that came in a platic test tube with a cap. My mother and sister had lipstick covers that also could've made a cool looking tube like device.

Last year I saw a modernized version of a nixie tube. Instead of heater elements in the shape of numbers stacked in a tube, there were several layers
of plexiglas with different numbers etched in them and stacked. Each layer had it's own tiny led, an only that specific slide would show.

Ya, I remember those too. I also remember candy lip stick. Never tried it, though. Must have had cooties on it. 8)

I picked up a kit for one of those from Banggood not too long ago. Looks and works really nice. They are called Lixie Tubes. There was a guy on Tindie that was selling individual ones for projects.

I played with one called Clementine. It's cross-platform
Linux/Windows (don't remember if it had a Mac client) and
consolidated Shoutcast and lots of other streaming services,
podcasts, and MP3/ogg playback. I liked it.
