• The Alpha Human - Proofreaders wanted

From Arelor@VERT to All on Saturday, October 05, 2019 18:08:15
    Hello,

I have recently finished writing The Alpha Human, a short fantasy story. It is a bit of a pulp piece, with an interesting and innovative twist. It features an unlikely main character who witnesses a classical plot without actually knowing what is going on.

I am not a native English speaker, but English speakers are the only people who is supports me. Therefore, my stories and articles are getting redacted directly in English, instead of being written in my mother language and then translated. This is problematic, because I know for sure that my native style is good, but I have doubts regarding my style in English. At least, when it comes to literary works.

I am looking for proofreaders who are willing to check this story and provide exhaustive feedback. I have a small team gathered already and we have set a Nexcloud instance which is very convenient as a groupware solution. So:

    ## What I need:
    * Somebody who can read English as a native.
    * Somebody who can read an *.odt file and use Libreoffice's (or similar) comment function to leave comments regarding the text.
    * Somebody who knows or can figure out how to use Cryptomator and Nextcloud . If you are using a BBS, chances are that you will find this to be a piece of cake.
    * Somebody who won't accept the task and then disappear.

    ## What I offer:
    * The chance to read the original work before it gets censored and mutilated by a publisher.
    * The chance to read some earlies works (and comment on them if desired).
    * A personal Nexcloud account with around 1Gb of storage. More might be possible, but I am tight on resources so requests for more will have to be analyzed.

I may be found at #cryptoforliberty in the cryptoforliberty.org IRC server. Beware that their SSL certificate is long expired.

I would be happy to do this. I've proofed and beta'd for several published authors in the past and the only thing I ever asked for in return was a signed hard copy of their book when it got published.

I would also ask for a proof/beta of my own works in return.

    Cool!

I might have about two to four hours per week for proofreading other people's stuff. Just beware I am no native English speaker.

I will create an account in our nextcloud instance. Please send your email address to me so I can get you registered in our system.

ok, I'm in. But can't find "Cryptomator" in the Windows Store to be able to decrypt your story to read it.

ok, I'm in. But can't find "Cryptomator" in the Windows Store to be able to decrypt your story to read it.

    Check here:

    https://cryptomator.org/

    Steps to use:

    * Dowload, install and set the Nexcloud Client (https://www.nextcloud.org)
    * Syncronize your Nextcloud client with our Nexcloud instance. This will download the encrypted repository to your machine.
    * Download, install and set cryptomator to use the repository you just downloaded. The repository will appear as an unencrypted virtual folder somewhere in your machine.
    * You can work in this decrypted folder at your leissure. Any changes you make will be automatically applied by cryptomator and syncronized to our Nexcloud instance by your Nexcloud client.
    * There is a directory for you to drop suggestions. You may take the original filecopy, comment it and drop a commented version in that folder.
    * You may upload anything you want me to proofread to the repository. Just keep in mind it is a shared system and other people will be able to read (and probably proofread) anything you upload. Alternatively, you may create a private share.

Do you mean PGP? Stood for Pretty Good Privacy. Even the NSA and the CIA had trouble with breaking its encryption.

Actually we do a lot of gpging. But it does not offer transparent encryption the way this thing does. GPG is for other things.

I just happen to use this setup for many other different tasks and groups. It is easier done than explained :)

Using a local set of clients is more work to set up, but if you are working with many people or moving multiple files all around it is much, much more convenient than accessing the files using your webbrowser and gpging them.

Just give it a go. Consider it free opsec training :) If you still can't figure it out I will think something else.

    Cheers!

GPG is a compatible encryption tool - Gnu Privacy Guard.

    Hello,

it looks like my tier 2 readers are having trouble setting a secure share up so I am switching to plan B. Here is a regular download link.

    https://nextcloud.operationalsecurity.es/index.php/s/gZoDXk97fYp3XWK

The password to access it is the same as the cryptomator password I sent to you over email.

I am setting Thursday 17 as a deadline for feedback. It is a very short piece and it can be read in just one seat.

Have fun, and befriend a horse!
