Recently I have been rewatching and in some cases watching for the first time some older tv series on various streaming services. My thought is they should better inform producers what is going on in with the show. IE some shows end with cliff hangers like they expected another season but the show was not renewed while others end a season in a manner that looks like it was a done deal but then continue for another season.
An example of the latter is Andromeda. Season 4 ends in such a manner that it could be the end of the series but there is a season 5.

What are you saying? If a show which was cancelled does very well in streaming, they do sometimes make a few more seasons. Is this what you mean?

But what you described does happen often. Sometimes a show just can't get funded for a season, or it misses some metric the network/investors demanded, maybe a key cast member runs off to do a moive...

A good example is Deadwood. Amazing production, cast, story, etc. However the Showrunner lost interest and HBO didn't want to pay the budget required to keep him interested. Later they did wrap it up with a Deadwood Movie, which was okay, but mostly a silly "reunion show".

I think we'll see some shows that paused production because of Covid end up never coming back.

They thought they were getting canceled after Season 4, hence the wrap up.


The same goes for Scrubs. The end of season 8 is the absolute perfect ending for the show. Do not go on to watch Season 9, except to watch it as some other show that's completely unrelated. Otherwise it'll just ruin it for you.

The New Girl had a perfect finale with two of the characters marrying, then they did another season with a time jump to them having moved out and they had a toddler. Odd.

That can happen and its not as bad when its that way around. Example Andromeda which is what Ive been watching the last episode of the Season 4 ends with everyone dead or presumed dead and Dillion walking through some sort of doors then seeing himself the doors open he tries to run back out but they close before he gets there. That would appear to most people to be the end of the series but instead they do seson 5 and use say that trance sent everyone through some kind of a time warp thing. The ones I hated was when a show was on TV (Before streaming) and ended a season in such a manner as to think they were planning to continue but something happens and they dont. Then your left wondering what happend to this person etc. I do realize that in some cases it may be unexpected but when its things like rateings declining they usually know that before hand and should make sure produces and writers know so they can end it properly.

Some shows don't know whether or not they are going to be renewed when they shoot the last episode of the previous season, so they tie all the loose
ends up and then wind up with another season. Others don't know or hope
they will be renewed so they leave some parts of the story unresolved.

In some of those later cases, they might bring the show back for a couple
of episodes just to finish it all, but in many cases they don't.

Ah yes, the old "and it was all just a dream" scenario. Lazy writing is what it is.

I see it now more then ever in the cleverly cut promos designed to fool you into thinking one thing is happening, but when you watch the actual episode it's totally different.
