I vote goes to Led Zepplin.

I would have to vote that way too as well as Pink Floyd as others have said.

If I leave out the main stream for a bit one of my favorites bands is Saga. A Canadian band that is mostly uknown here but they have always been a big draw in Europe. Their live albums and DVDs are always from shows in Europe.

They rock hard for a trio. Powerful prog-rock. Their lead singer was one of the few people who could cover Freddie Mercury decently -- he sang a couple of numbers with the rest of Queen and held his own.

    All those in favor?

Maybe 20 years ago I would have agreed, but now, Led Zeppelin has been overplayed too much.

That sort of depends on which songs you listen to. They have some lesser
played songs that are just as good, or better than the hits that get played over & over & over ... (Stairway to Heaven comes to mind)
As an example, for some reason I rarely hear the Immagrant Song played on the radio, and there are others as well, I just can't think of them at the

aviod them. From about 1994 thru 1999 I was the night time dispatcher o a small taxi company, working from 5PM to 5AM. The fleet was split

Unrelated question: Did you ever accept bribes from drivers for business?

Just wondering, because I have driven cab plenty, and I always felt like the suck ups were doing more than sucking up at times, and I have had some 12 hour shifts where I made $10 for the day.

No, I never did, although there were lots of drivers that were convinced I
did. I also drove plenty before dispatching, and I eventually ended up owning several of the cabs I was dispatching to, so drivers in cars owned by other owners always thought I was giving my drivers better jobs. I wasn't, for 2
main reasons. First off, my drivers paid me the same amount regardless of how much they made, so I had no reason to favor them. And the second reason was that we rarely asked customers were they were going, so I really had no way
of knowing which calls were the 'good' ones.

Another reason, one of the other dispatchers there was a guy that had bounced around between most of the cab companies in the county, and was a real creep. Drivers had to bribe him (me included when I used to drive) just to get any jobs, he was hated wherever he went, and I didn't want drivers to think I was anything like him.

Now I've had drivers come in after their shift was over and give me a tip because they had a good night, but I always made it clear that it wasn't nessesary, and I made sure they understood that, and that just because they gave me a tip they shouldn't expect any perks for it.

I think my days in the taxi biz were some of my most enjoyable ones, particularly the ones in the early to mid 90's.

get that feeling at times, especially after a long night with no pay.

Way back when I first started driving a cab it was for the big company in
town, and they also owned a comms company, so when I asked them if I could
have a cell phone in my cab their answer was sure, as long as you get it from us, along with service thru us. This was back in 1985, and I had just bought
my first taxi, a Ford LTDII that I also bought from the cab co. and so they installed the cell phone in the car for me as well. As it was a cab, not a personal car, they mounted it on a mounting bracket that also held the meter, so the phone was on display for all to see. Well, that led to several drivers accusing me of calling in false calls so I could be on the cab stand when a good call would go out. I tried to explain to some of the drivers I was friendly with that the phone had so much static on it, that if I tried to do that the phone operators at the co. would recognize me calling in! That was back in the days of analog cell service. In fact it was so long ago, I was getting service thru Cellular One, but they didn't have any towers in Fort Lauderdale yet, so they were leasing lines from AT&T. For the first 1 or 2 years I had that phone the ROAM light was on until they finally got their own towers setup. Even tho lots of drivers accussed me of doing all manner of things while I was driving at the big company, in fact I only ever did one thing 'wrong'. Unlike most of the other cab companies I've worked for the big one covers the entire county, rather than a smaller area within it, and back when they had voice radio dispatch it was fairly common for some drivers to
lie about where they were, trying to say they were closer to where they
thought the job was in hopes of getting the job. One time, one driver that I really didn't like, and who was always trying to make trouble for me had been dispatched to a call, then 10 minutes later the dispatcher called him asking him how close he was because they were calling back, then 5 minutes later yet again they were calling back, and again in another 5 minutes, so he must have either been much further away from the job than he really was, or he might
have had a fare in his cab while he accepted the call, or something like
that, well after the 3rd call back, I called into the office acting like I
was the customer (it was a hotel, not a residence), and told them to cancel
the call. Just to screw with that driver. I was on the other side of the
county at the time, but I'm sure at least one or more other cabs were going
to the hotel to see if they could steal the job, as that driver had a reputation of lying, or "stretching his hood" as we used to call it.

The 2 cops are facing prison sentences, but I support them 100% and thi they should be rewarded for what they did, whether it be the key to the city, or free food from Twisters. If I ever see them, I WILL treat them with respect.

Silly question: Do you think the cops knew at the time that the homeless guy they were shooting at

I don't know anything for a fact, but I'd be willing to bet that the cops involved in the shooting knew. Perhaps if they didn't know they might have given him more room to settle down, etc. but knowing he was not only
homeless, but a lowlife rapist as well, that just made it so much easier for them to pull the trigger. Their problem is that they can't say "I knew this
guy is a lowlife rapist piece of crap, so I was doing society a service by removing him from it" as that would never fly, even tho it should.

The Albuquerque police have been killing people left and right for the past
few years. They are some serious killing machines! Some young woman tried to run from them, and guess what? Last time she ran anywhere!

There was one night, at one of my old apartments here, where some crazy bitch was smashing windows (I watched her) and I wanted her gone, so I called ABQ police, and the cop came over, and the girl had disappeared by this point,
but the cop went up to the guy who was the victim of the window smashing, and pulled his gun on him and told him to put his hands on his head.. & I was watching all this and I was like "Yea! Are you still driving? How long did you do it for?

To answer your questions in order, no, I don't still drive a cab. I barely drive a car anymore, but that's another story for another day. As for how
long I drove cab, well I started in 1983, drove for a couple of months full time at night, at various times during this time I also would sometimes go
back to working in my family business, so then would only drive part time.
This was until 1986 when I stopped driving cab totally, also quit doing drugs
& drinking at the same time. I went back to driving cab in 1993 full time,
and it was with this cab company that I managed to buy 6 cabs, then became partners with a guy with 6 more cabs. I actually stopped driving sometime around 1996 and started dispatching. I dispatched at night, my partner dispatched during the day, and we got paid for doing that with 2 free cabs. When I say free, what I mean is we didn't have to pay the weekly 'lease' that owner/drivers have to pay to the company for their car(s). In 1999 I moved
from So Fla to east TN, and had a friend move up there with me, and I took 4 Dodge Diplomats with me, and I started a cab company in the small town where
I moved to. Unfortunately it didn't work out like I would have wanted it to.
In September of 99 slightly more than a week before my 40th birthday I had a heart attack, and found out why city health care is better than rural health care. Or I shouldn't say why, rather just that healthcare just IS better in more metropolitan areas. So that was the complete end of me and the cab business. I sold 1 of the cabs on eBay to a guy that collects policecars, I gave one to my buddy that moved up there with me (he had been my only other driver beside myself). One I traded in on a car I bought on eBay from a car dealer in NJ. At the time I was living in WV, and I was originally going to take a bus but when I checked, the bus fare was something like $129.00 or something like that, and the dealer also had a $100.00 fee I think it had to
do with a temp tag, or something like that, so I called them and asked if
they took trade-ins. The dealer said yes, but that he couldn't give me a
quote over the phone. I told him as long as he would give me a minimum of $100.00 I would be happy, and he said he would do that. So by driving the cab up there I saved myself $229.00. When I was in TN I had all 4 cars painted school bus yellow (or chrome as they call it), but when I had moved to WV the girl I was living with lived next to her parents, and her mother didn't like the yellow color, so I got some cheap blue paint and painted the car with a paint roller! When I pulled into the car dealers lot and said hello, and he realized that was the car I wanted to tradein, he started to laugh, and he
went into the office, and said something to all the salesmen there (it was a slow day) then he went around the side of the building, where some cars were being washed, and he comes around the corner with another guy and he's
telling him about a car that just came in, and he wants him to detail it
extra special, to make it look like it was new again, and the other guy is nodding his head in agreement, then he looks at the car the salesman is pointing at, and he freaks out! It took the salesman like 10 minutes to calm the guy down, and let him know that he wasn't serious!

Looks like I wandered off topic a bit, and typed a bit much as well, so I'll stop doing that now.

I was living in Smithfield. Actually I've found that once you expect them to
be sub-human jerks, generally speaking you can get along with them fairly
well (car dealers that is), as if you have no expectations of them, then they can't let you down, and can only impress you when they turn out to be nicer than you expected them to be.

When I had the cab co going in TN in some ways it was kind of funny at times. My friend that moved up from FL to TN to help me work it was kind of a
straight laced kinda guy, and in the county where we were located Cocke Cty
TN at the time there were 3 whore houses, 2 cock fighting arenas, and any number of bars that served both liquor by the shot (in a dry county) as well
as moonshine (the real deal), and when somebody would get into a cab he was driving, and want to go to the cock fights he would always act like he had no idea where they were, as he thought that it would be an accessory to a crime
if he just went and took them without them giving him directions on how to
get there. Well, one particular weekend there was a really big fight, and the first bunch of people he took to the fights, when he gets there, there's a Sherrifs dep. with the lights going on the top of his car, and he waves my friend over. At this point my friend is seeing visions of chain gangs going thru his mind, and he's freaking out, etc. when he gets up to where the Dep.
is standing next to his car, the Dep says to him "It's $5.00 for Parking" my friend is frozen, it takes him a few moments to realize he's not going to
jail, and then he realizes he has to explain to the guy that he's not going
to be parking, that he's a CAB, he's just dropping off his customers.

Another time he also freaked out due to 2 factors, first his past experiences with the lowlife cab riders in Fort Lauderdale, and secondly with the accent
of the local cops in TN. One day he drops a customer off at walmart, and he's coming back to the house that we're sharing as both our home, and office,
when a city cop pulls him over and walks up to the cab, and says to him " You have a fire in there?" He hears this and freaks out, turns around real fast, looking at the back seat, looking up & down, doesn't see anything. He says to the cop "was there a fire in here?" and the cop starts laughing, and says
"No, not a fire, a fire, F A R E". The cop was just stopping him to tell him that the speed limit was 45mph, and he was going 70, and that he should slow down a bit. Of course because they knew we lived in town they wouldn't
actually write either of us a speeding ticket, they only did that to
tourists. That is one thing I love about living in a small town, once they
get to know you, and know that you're basically an ok person, they basically don't bother you, for almost anything! I had a neighbor that was a lady in
her mid 70's and she used to hunt possum in the vacant lot across the street from her house (and next to mine) with a .22 rifle, and one time a city cop happened to come by while she was doing it, and told her she really shouldn't be doing that. Well, she told him fine, then he could just go and get the
last 2 that were out there that would fill her pot for the evening. Anywhere else somebody talks to a cop like that, they go to jail, but there, he took
her rifle, went into the lot, and shot 3 more possum for her!

They are totally cool about speeding cabs in Binghamton too. Seatbelts are
not required there, so I got in the habit of never wearing it, and when I got pulled over driving my personal vehicle, I told the cop I forgot and why, and she let me go.

I know that small towns can be fun, but sometimes that small circle of
friends can backfire, especially on the person who is the most different from the rest of the group. It happened to me severly when I fought my ex wife for custody of my kid. The judges, the clerks, the police, everybody in that
small town worked in harmony to destroy my life. And why? So they could
protect the interests of a despicable human being who has more roots in the town.

I think it would be nice to be somewhat in the middle of small towns and a big city, but being slightly closer to the bigger city. The only thing I don't
like about the city is the crime and always having to be on alert.
